Elon Falls to Delaware In Match One

NEWARK, Del. – The Elon University volleyball team fell to Delaware in straight sets on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • In the first set, Delaware jumped out to an 11-2 lead, forcing Elon to use two early timeouts. A kill from Cameron Lanier briefly halted the momentum, but the Blue Hens responded with a 10-3 run to extend their lead to 21-5. The deficit was too much for the Phoenix to overcome as the Blue Hens claimed set one 25-7.
  • The Blue Hens carried their momentum into the second set, taking the first five points. Elon responded with a 3-1 run to narrow the gap to 6-3, but Delaware countered with a 7-2 run to push their advantage to 13-5. A brief surge brought the Phoenix within nine at 19-10, but Delaware closed the set on a 6-1 run, winning 25-11.
  • The third followed a similar pattern as the Blue Hens went up 10-2. Elon mounted a 3-1 run with a kill from Anna Sewell and two Delaware errors to cut the deficit to 11-5. A 4-1 run from Delaware was matched with a 4-1 run from the Phoenix which kept Elon within six at 16-10. The Blue Hens then won four consecutive points to extend their lead to 20-10. Elon trimmed the deficit to nine at 22-13, but Delaware closed out the set 25-15 to secure the match.

  • The Phoenix returns to Bob Carpenter Center tomorrow for their final regular season game against the Blue Hens at 6 p.m.
