The Phoenix also plays a difficult eight-game CAA Football schedule, including four contests against teams that went .500 or better in league play. All 12 games are slated for Saturdays.
For the second consecutive year, Elon will open the season at Duke, with a game Aug. 30. The Blue Devils went 9-3 in 2024, including a 26-3 win over the Phoenix in the season opener. Duke will face Ole Miss in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on Jan. 2. The Blue Devils are 9-0-1 all-time against Elon with the tie coming in a 0-0 game in 1921. It will be the fourth straight season in which the Phoenix opens against a team from a Power Four conference, dating back to Wake Forest in 2023 (37-17 loss) and Vanderbilt in 2022 (42-31 loss).
Elon will renew its rivalry with Davidson in week two, hosting the Wildcats on Sept. 6. This will be the 20
th all-time meeting between the programs (Davidson leads the series 16-3) but only the third time since 1954. Elon has won three in a row in the series, most recently a 26-23 victory during the spring 2021 season. Davidson went 6-5 in 2024.
Elon will travel to Cullowhee, N.C. to face Western Carolina on Sept. 13. The Catamounts went 7-5 in 2024, which included a 24-17 victory inside Rhodes Stadium. Elon is 24-18-2 in 44 all-time meetings against WCU but the Catamounts have won two straight. When Elon and Western Carolina last met in Cullowhee in 2013, WCU tied the game with nine seconds remaining and then won 27-24 on a 39-yard overtime field goal.
The team's final non-conference game will be at East Tennessee State on Sept. 20. ETSU went 7-5 in 2024 and defeated Elon 34-14 inside Rhodes Stadium. ETSU leads the all-time series 3-1 and has won both meetings in Johnson City, Tenn. Elon's lone victory came in a 14-0 shutout in 2003.
Conference play begins Sept. 27 as Elon hosts Hampton. The two teams have played each of the past three seasons with the Phoenix winning the first two meetings before a 41-21 Pirates win in 2024. Elon won the only other meeting in Rhodes Stadium, a 51-17 shellacking to close the 2023 season. Hampton went 5-7 in 2024 and 2-6 in league play.
On Oct. 4, Elon heads to Maryland to play Towson. The Tigers were 7-5 overall and tied Elon with a 5-3 conference record in 2024. Towson is 6-5 all-time against Elon but the Phoenix won the most recent contest, a 27-10 win in Elon in 2022. The Maroon and Gold has also won the last two games played in Towson, posting a 37-14 victory in 2021 and a 25-23 win over then-No. 19 Towson in 2019.
Elon hosts Villanova on Oct. 11. The Wildcats went 10-4 overall in 2024 and 6-2 in CAA play, advancing to the second round of the FCS playoffs. Villanova is 3-1 all-time against Elon and has back-to-back shutouts, a 21-0 win in 2023 and a 35-0 victory in 2021. The Wildcats are 2-0 all-time in Rhodes Stadium.
The annual slugfest with William & Mary takes place in Virginia on Oct. 18. In a match-up that has become fiercely contested in recent years, Elon has won three straight in the series to even the all-time record at 5-5. Six of the last seven games in the series have been decided by eight points or less and Elon won 40-36 in 2024 on a touchdown with five seconds to play. William & Mary went 7-5 this past year and 4-4 in conference play.
Elon will travel to Maine for an Oct. 25 game with the Black Bears. The all-time series between the two programs is tied at 3-3 following the Phoenix's 31-25 win in November. Elon has won 2-of-3 games in Orono, Maine all-time, which includes the most recent affair, a 33-23 victory in 2021. Maine went 5-7 in 2024 and 3-5 in CAA Football play.
Following a bye week, Elon will host Rhode Island on Nov. 8. The Rams advanced to the second round of the FCS playoffs this fall and finished with a record of 11-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Elon is 4-2 all-time against Rhode Island but the two programs have not faced each other since 2022. In that game, then-No. 25 Rhode Island eked out a 17-10 win over then-No. 14 Elon in Kingston, R.I.
Elon's final road game of the 2025 season will be a short trip to Campbell on Nov. 15. Elon scored a season-high 50 points in a 50-27 win for Homecoming in 2024 and the Camels were just 3-9 overall and 1-7 in CAA play. With the win, Elon improved to 3-0 all-time against Campbell. Both of the other two meetings took place in Buies Creek with Elon with 28-24 in 2023 and 24-23 in 2021. Each of those contests were decided in the final moments of regulation.
The Phoenix will end the regular season by hosting Triad rival North Carolina A&T on Nov. 22. It will be the second consecutive year in which this game concludes the regular season as the Phoenix won 31-21 in Greensboro to end 2024. The Aggies struggled to a 1-11 season in 2024 and an 0-8 conference campaign. North Carolina A&T leads the all-time series 8-6 and has won 4-of-6 meetings inside Rhodes Stadium. Elon did win the most recent home game, a 27-3 victory in 2023.
Elon will look to use the momentum built from a four-game win streak to close the 2024 season. The Phoenix went 6-6 overall and 5-3 in CAA Football play. The are the only team in the CAA to win five conference games or more in each of the last four years.
