Women’s Basketball Falls To Furman On Education Day

ELON, N.C. — Hannah Dereje tied for the team lead with a career-high 12 points in the Elon women's basketball team's 61-57 loss to Furman on Education Day.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Furman jumped out to a quick 7-2 advantage before Laila Anderson knocked down a three-pointer and Hannah Dereje added a driving layup to tie the game at 7-7. The Paladins responded with a three-pointer to regain the lead at 10-7, but the Phoenix answered with a 4-0 run to secure their first lead at 11-10. Elon closed the quarter on a 5-2 run, taking a 15-13 edge into the second quarter.
  • Elon dominated the start of the second quarter, launching an 8-0 run while holding Furman scoreless until the 3:43 mark of the half. Although the Paladins trimmed the deficit to six at 23-17, the Phoenix responded with a 6-3 spurt to extend their lead to 29-20 heading into halftime.
  • Furman started the third quarter on an 8-2 run to trim Elon's lead to three at 31-28. The Phoenix then responded with a 7-0 run to regain a double-digit advantage at 38-28. However, the Paladins closed the quarter going on a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to four, with Elon holding a 42-38 edge heading into the final period.
  • The teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter before back-to-back Furman scores gave the Paladins their first lead of the half at 45-44. A driving layup by Maraja Pass quickly regained the lead for Elon at 46-45, and a bucket from Raven Preston later extended the Phoenix advantage to 52-49. However, Furman responded with three consecutive three-pointers to surge ahead by six at 58-52. Despite a late three-pointer from Jayda Angel that brought Elon within three at 60-57, a Furman free throw in the final seconds sealed the game, with the Phoenix falling 61-57.
NOTES
  • The Phoenix returned the same starters in Iycez Adams, Laila Anderson, Kamryn Doty, Maraja Pass and Raven Preston.
  • Hannah Dereje notched a career-high 12 points, going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line and adding three rebounds.
  • Preston matched Dereje with a team-high 12 points, also contributing six rebounds and a team-best three assists.
  • Anderson scored in double figures for the fifth time this season, finishing with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field.
  • Adams posted a season-high seven rebounds to lead the team on the boards.
  • Ruby Willard recorded a career-best three steals, while Adams and Alyssa Ervin each registered a block.
  • Elon outperformed Furman in offensive rebounds (17-12), steals (11-5), and points off turnovers (29-24).

  • The maroon and gold will travel to Greenville, N.C., on Sunday, December 8, to take on East Carolina. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
