WBB Strong Defensive First Half Falls Short At Stony Brook

Box Score STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Elon University women's basketball team (9-17, 5-8) played a strong defensive game but ultimately fell short on the road 61-32 to the Stony Brook Seawolves (21-3,11-2) on Sunday afternoon. 

Maya Johnson finished with a game-high eight points on 44-percent shooting, adding five boards and one block. Two Phoenix players recorded double-figure rebounds with Ajia James grabbing a season-high 12 boards followed by Hannah Dereje with a career-high of 10.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Elon got out to a 7-3 lead over the Seawolves, with baskets from Ajia James, Diamond Monroe and Maya Johnson. Stony Brook responded with an 8-3 run to end the quarter ahead of the Phoenix 11-10. 
  • A strong bucket from Johnson and Monroe three-pointer gave the Phoenix a 20-17 advantage with 6:49 left in the second quarter. Three straight Seawolves baskets put them back in control at 19-15. Each team traded baskets before a Hannah Dereje layup got the Phoenix within two with 33 seconds left in the half. Stony Brook ended the half with a three-pointer to lead Elon 24-19.
  • The Seawolves outscored the Phoenix 20-5 in the third quarter taking a 44-24 lead entering the final 10 minutes of play. 
  • The Phoenix chipped away at the deficit throughout the fourth quarter but ultimately fell 61-32 to the Seawolves. 
NOTES
  • Elon returned the same starters in Ajia James, Maya Johnson, Diamond Monroe, Vanessa Taylor and Regina Walton
  • Johnson led the Phoenix with eight points followed by Hannah Dereje with seven. 
  • Monroe and Taylor added six points apiece as Monroe matched her career-high in steals with two.
  • James grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds off the glass for the Phoenix, her second consecutive game leading Elon and first time this season with double-figure. 
  • Dereje recorded career-highs in boards with 10 and two steals. 
  • At the half, Elon outnumbered Stony Brook in points in the paint (10-8), steals (4-2) and assists (5-2) while forcing eight turnovers. 
  • Elon held Stony Brook to 24 points in the first half, the lowest points the Seawolves have scored in a half in league play this season. 
  • The maroon and gold held the Seawolves to their lowest total points in the league play at 61. 
UP NEXT
  • The maroon and gold will return to the court Friday, Feb. 23, as they travel to William & Mary for a 7 p.m. contest against the Tribe. On Sunday, Feb. 25, the Phoenix will host North Carolina A&T for a rematch in CAA play. Tipoff against the Aggies is set for 1 p.m.
