Elon And Coastal Carolina Battle To Third Consecutive One-Goal Game

Elon, N.C. – For the third consecutive year, the Elon and Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse teams played a game decided by one goal. This time, the Chanticleers came out on top 8-7 Saturday at Rudd Field. Coastal Carolina overcame a 7-6 fourth quarter deficit with a pair of goals for the win.
 
With the loss, Elon falls to 3-2 on the season. Coastal Carolina improved to 2-3.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Coastal Carolina took a 2-1 lead after one period with Sammy Fisher scoring the lone Elon goal on an assist from Ana Lee Vandiver.
  • The Phoenix, though, turned the tables by outscoring CCU 3-1 in the second period. Vandiver and Fisher scored back-to-back to put Elon ahead for the first time. After Coastal Carolina tied the score, Maddie Engelkraut put Elon ahead 4-3 at the break on a goal with 2:59 remaining.
  • Elon took the only two-goal advantage of the game midway through the third when Anna Hackett put the Phoenix ahead 5-3. Coastal Carolina, though, answered with a pair of goals in less than a minute to tie it.
  • Late in the third, Fisher scored her third goal of the contest to put Elon ahead 6-5 going into the fourth.
  • After CCU tied the game early in the fourth, Mikaela Buoscio put Elon back ahead on an assist from Cierra Hopson with 12:24 to go. The Chanticleers closed out the scoring on goals with 7:10 and 5:20 to play for the 8-7 win.
 
NOTES AND STATS
  • Sammy Fisher's hat trick was her first of the season and seventh of her career.
  • Anna Hackett had a game-high eight shots, including four on goal.
  • Freshman Reagan Kuehn tied her career-high with four ground balls and she added two caused turnovers.
  • Jessie Penner led Elon with three caused turnovers.
  • MJ Santa Barbara, who ranks No. 5 nationally in draw controls, had a game-high eight.
  • Caitlin Walsh made six saves in goal.
  • The Phoenix was a perfect 2-for-2 on free-position shots.
  • Elon outshot Coastal Carolina 22-19 and both teams had 14 shots on goal.
  • Elon was 18-of-18 on clear attempts.
  • For the fifth straight game, Elon led in the draw circle, winning 12-of-18 draws.
  • Elon has led or tied in the fourth quarter in every game this year.
  • Elon now leads the all-time series against Coastal Carolina 8-2 with the Chanticleers winning 15-14 in overtime in 2022 and the Phoenix posting a 16-15 win last year.
  • The 15 combined goals was the lowest scoring Elon lacrosse game since the Phoenix beat James Madison 6-5 in 2021.
  • Elon has outscored its last three opponents 15-1 in the second quarter and 21-8 on the season.  
 
UP NEXT
  • Elon is on the road for the next two games, including Wednesday night's tilt at East Carolina at 5:00 p.m.
  • After that, the Phoenix will play at Virginia Tech March 6 at 1:00 p.m. before returning home to host High Point March 13 at 5:00 p.m.
