ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's basketball team (9-19, 5-10) fell in a 77-46 setback at home against the North Carolina A&T Aggies (17-8, 11-3) on Sunday afternoon.
For the second consecutive game,
Maya Johnson recorded a double-double with a game-high 12 points and 10 boards.
Maraja Pass followed with 10 points while
Diamond Monroe added seven.
THE RUNDOWN
- A pull-up jumper from Regina Walton put the Phoenix on the board quick in the opening quarter. North Carolina A&T pulled ahead 11-7 before Elon put together a set of baskets to take the lead at 13-11. The teams went back-and-forth, and the Aggies ended the quarter with a three-point basket taking 17-14 advantage over Elon to end the first quarter.
- The teams traded baskets to start the second quarter before a second-chance layup from Diamond Monroe gave the Phoenix a three-point lead at 24-21. The Aggies went on a 13-2 run before Ruby Willard hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to enter halftime with Elon trailing North Carolina A&T 34-29.
- The Aggies outscored the Phoenix 18-3 in the third quarter to take a 52-32 lead.
- Elon would not get any closer in the fourth quarter as North Carolina A&T pulled away to seal a 77-46 victory.
NOTES
- Ajia James, Maya Johnson, Diamond Monroe, Vanessa Taylor and Regina Walton started for Elon.
- Maya Johnson led the Phoenix for the third straight game scoring 12 points while grabbing a team-best 10 rebounds. Johnson went 5-for-11 from the floor and 2-for-2 at the charity stripe.
- Maraja Pass scored double figures for the 11th time this season with 10 going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and 2-for-5 from the field.
- Vanessa Taylor paced the team with three steals followed by James with two.
- Johnson and Jessica Booth both added a block while Walton tallied a team-high two assists.
- At the half, Elon outnumbered the Aggies in points off the bench (10-4) and blocks (2-1) while forcing eight turnovers.
