Strong Offensive Performance Propels WBB To Road Victory Over Hampton

HAMPTON, VA. – A strong shooting Elon women's basketball team (8-15, 4-6) defeated Hampton (2-18, 2-8) on the road, 69-51, Friday night.

Ajia James led the Phoenix netting 17 points going 4-for-7 from the three-point line. Iycez Adams continued to pace the team on the boards grabbing 12 rebounds. 

"I am super proud of this team resiliency tonight. This weekend's saying was get back in the ring and fight, and we fought for 40 minutes," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "I am just really satisfied with our offensive execution today and we shot the ball well. Anytime we can shoot the ball well it gives us a chance to be successful. We know we are going to be consistent with our defensive effort but tonight things fell into place on both sides of the basketball."
 
THE RUNDOWN
  • The Lady Pirates gained a quick 5-2 lead in the opening quarter. The Phoenix responded with a 10-2 run of their own to acquire a 13-7 lead over Hampton. A three-pointer from Ajia James would close out the first quarter with Elon leading 16-10.
  • James continued her run with six straight points to extend the Phoenix lead to 12 at 22-10. Hampton chipped away at the deficit with a 10-2 run cutting Elon's lead to four at 24-20. But, an offensive rebound and finish from Vanessa Taylor gave the momentum back to Elon. The Phoenix would finish the half on a 13-4 run, giving Elon a 37-24 halftime advantage.
  • The Phoenix carried the momentum into the second half outscoring Hampton 8-4 midway through the third quarter keeping a solid 45-28 lead. With just over three minutes left in the quarter, Elon went on a 10-2 run, stretching the lead to 23 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
  • The Lady Pirates outscored the Phoenix in the fourth quarter 19-14, but ultimately Elon secured a 69-51 road win over Hampton. 
NOTES
  • Iycez Adams, Jessica Booth, Maya Johnson, Maraja Pass and Vanessa Taylor started for the Phoenix.
  • Ajia James led Elon scoring 17 points going 5-for-10 the field including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.
  • On the glass, Adams paced the Phoenix grabbing 12 rebounds, her sixth time this season grabbing double-figure boards. Adams also added three blocks to the stat sheet.
  • Pass recorded a team-high five assists followed by Booth with three.
  • Elon's 37 points in the first half were their most scored points in the first half in conference play this season.
  • In the first half Elon outnumbered Hampton in rebounds (22-18) and bench points (25-3) with 11 coming from James. Diamond Monroe recorded nine points in the first half going 3-for-3 from the three-point line.
  • As a team, the Phoenix shot 50 percent (8-for-16) from the three-point line, their best percentage so far this season. 
  • Elon outnumbered the Lady Pirates in rebounds (40-35), second chance points (14-11) and bench points (35-8).
UP NEXT
  • The maroon and gold will welcome UNCW to Schar Center on Sunday, Feb 11 for their annual Play4Kay game. Tipoff against the Seahawks is slated for 1 p.m.
