No. 8 Campbell Outlasts No. 9 Elon In Round Two Of CAA Tournament


WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 9 seed Elon University women's basketball team fell to No. 8 seed Campbell 67-52 in the second round of the 2024 CAA Women's Basketball Tournament. Elon's season comes to an end with an overall record of 11-21. Campbell improves to 17-13 and will face No. 1 seed Stony Brook Friday in the CAA Tournament quarterfinals. 

Iycez Adams led the Phoenix netting 17 points going 7-for-18 from the field and 3-for-5 from the free-throw line. Ajia James led on the glass for the fifth time this season grabbing five. Adams, Maraja Pass and Hannah Dereje all followed with four boards apiece.

THE RUNDOWN
  • The Lady Camels outscored the Phoenix 14-3 in the opening quarter before Elon came back, outscoring Campbell 15-8 midway through the second quarter to cut the lead to four at 22-18. 
  • The Lady Camels would fight to extend their lead again with a Regina Walton jumper closing out the first half. The Phoenix shot 53.3 percent in the second quarter to outscore the Lady Camels 19-14 but still trailed 28-22 at the half. 
  • Campbell started the third quarter on a 16-7 run pulling ahead 44-29 with 2:28 remaining in the frame. The Phoenix would fight back to cut the deficit to 44-33 thanks to free-throws from Walton and an and-one from Hannah Dereje. Elon trailed Campbell 45-33 entering the final 10 minutes of play.
  • The teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter but Elon was never able to overcome the deficit. 
  • 39-51. The Camels outscored the Phoenix 16-13 in the final six minutes of the game to seal a 67-52 victory over the Phoenix. 
NOTES
  • Iycez Adams, Jessica Booth, Maya Johnson, Maraja Pass and Vanessa Taylor started for Elon this afternoon.
  • Adams led the team for the 12th time the season with 17 points, her 16th time in double-figures. She also added four rebounds, four steals and one block. 
  • Regina Walton added nine points for the Phoenix followed by Johnson with eight. 
  • On the glass, Ajija James paced the Phoenix with a game-high 5 boards. Adams, Dereje and Pass all followed with four. 
  • Pass added two assists, totaling 110 on her freshman season, tying Tierra Bumbrey who hit the mark in 2004-05. 
  • For the 16th time this season the Phoenix grabbed 12-plus offensive rebounds against their opponents. 
  • As a team, Elon outnumbered the Lady Camels in steals (6-4), second chance points (16-8) and bench points (23-11).
