Wilmington, N.C.- The Elon Phoenix (9-12, 0-1 CAA) offense scattered 12 hits across Brooks Field Friday afternoon but fell 13-3 to UNCW (12-10, 1-0 CAA).
Four different Phoenix registered multi-hit afternoons while eight of the nine starters collected a hit.
Justin Mitrovich was masterful after the third inning, facing the minimum in three of his final four innings on the hill.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UNCW got to Mitrovich early with three hits in the first inning while bringing around a pair of runs.
- Elon got a run back in the third using some two-out hitting from Kenny Mallory Jr. and Charlie Granatell. Mallory singled and with two runners on, Charlie Granatell laced a double into right center field to get the Phoenix back within one.
- The Seahawks got the run back and added another following three straight hits to open the bottom of the frame.
- Elon added another run on an RBI double from Alex Duffey. Elon totaled three hits in the inning and would leave the bases loaded.
- Mitrovich settled in comfortably from the fourth inning on, striking out batters in the fourth and the fifth.
- Mitrovich retired eight straight batters before Elon came up to the plate in the eighth inning. The Phoenix began the inning with a double from Connor Offshack while another Duffey double brought Offshack home. The Phoenix would load the bases again down a run but could not bring a runner home.
- UNCW added nine runs in the bottom of the eighth to blow the game open.
- Elon could not muster a response in the top of the ninth with the final deficit being 10 runs in the 13-3 loss.
NOTES AND STATS
- Justin Mitrovich earned his sixth start of the season. Mitrovich tied his career-high with seven innings pitched and struck out seven while walking one.
- Mitrovich reached 50 strikeouts during the game and currently leads all sophomores in the nation in strikeouts.
- Duffey, Offshack, Shane Paradine and James Broderick all put together multi-hit efforts against the Seahawks.
- Paradine extended his hitting streak to six games in which he has gone 8-24 over that stretch.
- Kenny Mallory Jr. extended his on-base streak to 19 straight games with a third inning single on Friday.
- James Broderick had two singles in the Friday afternoon contest. His fourth multi-hit effort of the season.
- Duffey's two doubles bring his total to five on the season while Offshack's double puts him at seven on the campaign.
