Elon Drops Game One To UNCW

Wilmington, N.C.- The Elon Phoenix (9-12, 0-1 CAA) offense scattered 12 hits across Brooks Field Friday afternoon but fell 13-3 to UNCW (12-10, 1-0 CAA).

Four different Phoenix registered multi-hit afternoons while eight of the nine starters collected a hit. Justin Mitrovich was masterful after the third inning, facing the minimum in three of his final four innings on the hill.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UNCW got to Mitrovich early with three hits in the first inning while bringing around a pair of runs.
  • Elon got a run back in the third using some two-out hitting from Kenny Mallory Jr. and Charlie Granatell. Mallory singled and with two runners on, Charlie Granatell laced a double into right center field to get the Phoenix back within one.
  • The Seahawks got the run back and added another following three straight hits to open the bottom of the frame.
  • Elon added another run on an RBI double from Alex Duffey. Elon totaled three hits in the inning and would leave the bases loaded.
  • Mitrovich settled in comfortably from the fourth inning on, striking out batters in the fourth and the fifth.
  • Mitrovich retired eight straight batters before Elon came up to the plate in the eighth inning. The Phoenix began the inning with a double from Connor Offshack while another Duffey double brought Offshack home. The Phoenix would load the bases again down a run but could not bring a runner home.
  • UNCW added nine runs in the bottom of the eighth to blow the game open.
  • Elon could not muster a response in the top of the ninth with the final deficit being 10 runs in the 13-3 loss.
