Vergantino, Sprock Homer In Sunday Loss To UNCW

Wilmington, N.C.- Ryan Sprock and Will Vergantino delivered powerful blows to UNCW, but it was not enough as the Elon Phoenix (9-14, 0-3 CAA) fell to the UNCW Seahawks (14-10, 3-0 CAA) Sunday afternoon.

Both Sprock and Vergantino finished with multi-hit days with both delivering a home run and a double. Tank Yaghoubi picked up a hit in his one at-bat Sunday.

Christo Garrelts had one of the best relief appearances of his Elon career. Garrelts went 3.1 innings allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out a pair of hitters.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the first time in the series, Elon struck first against the Seahawks. Will Vergantino punished a 1-1 changeup and sent it 449 feet over the left field fence to give the Phoenix a 3-0 lead.
  • UNCW answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the score.
  • UNCW added another run in the bottom of the second on a solo home run.
  • Elon tied in the score in the top of the third with a Ryan Sprock RBI double that scored Charlie Granatell all the way from first base.
  • The Seahawks countered the tie with two more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 6-4 lead.
  • Christo Garrelts quieted the Seahawks attack in the fourth and the fifth allowing no hits and just a walk in the two frames.
  • Ryan Sprock halved the deficit in the top of the sixth on a solo shot to right center.
  • UNCW expanded their lead in the seventh and eighth to stretch the lead to the largest of the game at five runs.
  • The final margin would end at five runs with the Phoenix falling to the Seahawks 10-5.
