Blacksburg, Va. – The Elon University women's lacrosse team led 4-1 after the first quarter Wednesday afternoon at Virginia Tech, but the Hokies outscored the Phoenix by seven in the second quarter and went on for a 17-7 win.
Virginia Tech improved to 5-2 with the win and Elon dropped to 4-3, snapping a two-game road winning streak for the Phoenix.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter on goals from Mikaela Buoscio, Kailey McKenna, Sammy Fisher and Ana Lee Vandiver.
- Buoscio put the Phoenix ahead 1-0 and, after Virginia Tech tied it, McKenna scored for a 2-1 Elon lead.
- Fisher scored unassisted and Vandiver scored on a pass from Cierra Hopson with just two seconds remaining in the first quarter for a 4-1 lead.
- Virginia Tech scored all seven goals of the second quarter to lead 8-4 at the half.
- The Hokies continued to build the lead in the third quarter. Anna Hackett and Fisher both scored in the third quarter but Virginia Tech led 12-6 going into the fourth.
- Hackett scored her second goal of the game in the fourth but Virginia Tech outscored the Phoenix 5-1 in the period.
STATS AND NOTES
- Elon led after the first quarter for the second consecutive game and for the fourth time this year.
- Fisher and Hackett led Elon with two goals apiece. It was Fisher's third straight game with at least two goals and fourth straight with 2+ points. It marked Hackett's fifth game of 2024 with at least two goals. She now has a team-high 16 goals on the season.
- Fisher's two-point day gives her 63 points in her career, moving into a tie for ninth in program history. Fisher also had four draw controls, giving her 76 on her career to move into fourth in program history.
- Hackett was 1-for-1 on free-position shots, making her 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) on the year.
- Hackett, Jessie Penner, Reagan Kuehn and Bridget Kelly each had two ground balls.
- Kuehn extended her streak of games with at least one caused turnover to seven – every game of her collegiate career.
- MJ Santa Barbara led Elon with seven draw controls. Just a freshman, Santa Barbara climbed from tenth to seventh in career draw controls at Elon with 63.
- Caitlin Walsh had her second consecutive game with 10 saves in goal.
- Entering the game among the top 25 teams in the country in clear percentage, Elon was 13-of-14 on the day.
