Adams, Phoenix Overpowers Hofstra On Elon Day

ELON, N.C. – A 20-point performance from Iycez Adams prevailed the Elon Phoenix women's basketball team (11-19, 7-10) to a 74-62 win over the Hofstra Pride (9-19, 3-14).

Adams went 9-for-10 from the field while grabbing four rebounds in just 17 minutes. On the glass, Ajia James paced the Phoenix with eight boards.

"It's very exciting to get a big win on Elon Day and just really excited for this team and where we are and where we are headed," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "We are building a lot of momentum to go into the conference tournament. We're getting people back, we're healthy and this was a big game for Iycez tonight. It is definitely good to have her back in her flow. I'm excited about the game on Saturday and excited about carrying this momentum into conference tournament play."

THE RUNDOWN
  • The Phoenix came out strong in the opening quarter gaining an 11-3 lead in the first four minutes of the frame. Hofstra chipped away at Elon's lead but a steal and finish from Ajia James ended the quarter with Elon on top 19-11.
  • Three consecutive jumpers from Maya Johnson and Iycez Adams extended Elon's lead to 14 at 25-11 before the Pride went on a 7-0 run to get within single digits. The teams traded baskets, but an and-one from James gave Elon an 11-point lead with just 2:38 remaining in the half. The back-and-forth continued with the Phoenix heading into the locker room leading by ten, 42-32.
  • The maroon and gold started the third quarter on a 7-0 run before Hofstra put together a 6-0 run of their own to put the score at 49-37. The team traded baskets before a Hannah Dereje and-one and a second-chance layup from Aly Wadkovsky ended the quarter with Elon ahead 60-46.
  • Hofstra went on a 9-2 run in the fourth quarter to pull within seven at 62-55 but that is as close as they got. Late layups and free throws helped Elon pull away to earn a 74-62 victory over the Pride.
