Elon Falls To Drexel On Senior Day

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's basketball team (11-20, 7-11) fell on Senior Day 56-43 to Drexel (14-14, 10-8) Saturday afternoon.

Iycez Adams finished with a game-high 13 points on 50 percent shooting, tying her career-high in blocks with four and adding two rebounds. Jessica Booth and Maraja Pass led the Phoenix on the glass with four rebounds followed by Maya Johnson with three.

"I'm just super excited about the senior class. They mean a lot to me, mean a lot to the university and just grateful for the blood, sweat and tears they have poured out over the years," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "Unfortunately, today did not turn out the way I would have liked for them but it's not over. We still have a lot to look forward to, so I am looking forward to riding it until the wheels fall off for our seniors."

THE RUNDOWN
  • Drexel came out to a quick 14-2 lead over the Phoenix. An and-one from Iycez Adams got the Phoenix back within single digits at 16-7. The Dragons outscored the Phoenix 8-4 to close the quarter ahead of Elon 24-11.
  • Baskets from Ajia James and Hannah Dereje started the second quarter cutting the Dragons lead to 24-15. Drexel put together a 9-4 run before the Phoenix ended the half on a 6-2 run of their own thanks to a pull-up jumper from Regina Walton along with a block and layup from Iycez Adams. Elon ended the half trailing Drexel 35-25.
  • Each team traded baskets to open the third quarter. With 5:55 left in the frame Drexel went on a 7-2 run to pull ahead 44-29. The Phoenix again chipped away at the deficit getting within 10 at 44-34 thanks to free throws from Maraja Pass and a three-point bucket from Jessica Booth.
  • Each team only scored once within the first six minutes of the fourth quarter. Drexel outscored Elon 7-4 in the final four minutes of the game to seal a 56-43 victory.
NOTES
  • Iycez Adams, Jessica Booth, Ajia James, Maya Johnson and Vanessa Taylor started for Elon this afternoon for Senior Day.
  • For the second consecutive game and 11th time this season Adams led the Phoenix scoring 13 points going 6-for-12 from the field.
  • Adams also added two rebounds, two steals and matched her career-high in blocks with four.
  • Booth and Maraja Pass led Elon on the with four rebounds. Johnson followed tallying three boards.
  • Pass and Regina Walton tallied a team-high four assists while Booth followed with three.
  • At the half, Elon outnumbered the Dragons in offensive rebounds (7-4), steals (5-3) and blocks (2-1).
  • Overall, the Phoenix outnumbered Drexel in steals (11-8), points in the paint (24-20) and blocks (4-2).

  • The Phoenix begins play at the 2024 Jersey Mike's CAA Women's Basketball Championship, beginning next week on Wednesday, Mar. 13 at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C. Elon will likely finish as the No. 9 seed for the upcoming tournament and will play the No. 8 seed Thursday, Mar. 14 at 12:00 p.m. The game will air on FloHoops.
