Towson Forces Rubber Match Versus Phoenix

TOWSON, Md. – A rally in the bottom of the fourth inning by Towson downed the Elon University softball team as the Phoenix fell to the Tigers, 5-1, in the second game of its CAA series on Saturday, April 13, at Tiger Softball Stadium.

Elon (15-25, 9-8 CAA) and Towson (16-25, 6-11 CAA) will battle for the series tomorrow in the rubber match. The Tigers also force the all-time series to be deadlocked at 15-15.

AT THE PLATE
• Elon and Towson were tied in hits with seven each, with the Phoenix leaving six runners on base. Allee Seering was 2-of-3 at the plate for the Phoenix while Megan Grant was 2-of-4 for the maroon and gold. Seering also stole her team-best 14th base of the year.

IN THE CIRCLE
Taylor Cherry was saddled with the loss, falling to 4-4 on the season. The redshirt sophomore pitched 3.1 innings and allowed six hits and five runs with a strikeout. Meredith Wells pitched 2.2 frames in relief and allowed one hit.

THE RUNDOWN
• Both teams battled through a pitchers' duel in the first two and a half innings. Elon was able to have runners reach in each of the first three frames, but the Tigers' Erin Brown worked herself out of trouble each time to leave the runners stranded.
• A leadoff solo home run by the Tigers scratched across the first run of the game. Isabella Canesi worked a 0-1 count before sending a hit over the wall in left center to put Towson up first, 1-0.
• Elon worked to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Seering reached on a leadoff single down the right field line before stealing second to move into scoring position. A groundout advanced her to third before scoring on a sac fly by Gabi Schaal to knot the game at one-all.
• Towson came back with a four-run bottom of the fourth. The Tigers broke the tie on an RBI triple to right center before adding another run via a sac fly to right. A single to right field brought in two more runners as the Phoenix faced a 5-1 deficit after four.
• The Phoenix had another chance to add some runs to the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Carley Davis reached on a one-out single to second with Seering joining her on the bases after a single of her own. A fielder's choice would lead the Phoenix to have runners at the corners, but another fielder's choice on the next at bat would keep the Phoenix scoreless once again.
• After the Phoenix got out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth via a double play, the maroon and gold looked to rally in the top of the seventh. That would not come to fruition however as Elon was retired in order as Towson took the game two victory, 5-1.
