Phoenix Evens Series at Stony Brook; Cliches Spot for CAA Championships

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Elon University softball team snapped the nation's longest active winning streak as the Phoenix earned a 9-7 win at Stony Brook in the second game of its CAA series on Saturday afternoon, April 27, at University Field.

The win coupled with losses this weekend by Drexel and Towson helped the Phoenix (20-26, 14-9 CAA) clinch a spot for the upcoming CAA Tournament. Elon's victory over Stony Brook (31-14, 16-7 CAA) also snapped the Seawolves' 18-game winning streak. It's the second time this season that the Phoenix has snapped a double-digit winning streak with Elon halting Delaware's 13-game mark on April 5.

AT THE PLATE
• The Phoenix had 11 hits in the game with three players having multi-hit efforts. Carley Davis went 3-of-4 at the dish with a season-high five RBI while Greta Hessenthaler and Mauri Murray went 2-of-4 at the plate.
Gabi Schaal homered for the fourth straight game, bringing her total to 10 on the season. The redshirt junior takes sole possession of fifth on the program's all-time career home run list with 26 career dingers.

IN THE CIRCLE
Isley Duggins was credited with the win, going to 4-6 on the season in relief. Meredith Wells pitched the majority of the game, earning her third save of the season. Wells tossed 5.2 frames and allowed no earned runs with a strikeout in the contest.

THE RUNDOWN
• The Phoenix got off to a fast start in the top of the first. Megan Grant led off with a single and then advanced to second on a sac bunt. Another single moved her to third before she scored on an RBI single through the left side by Davis. After a groundout moved runners to the corners, Schaal worked a full count before connecting on her 10th homer of the season as the three-run blast gave the Phoenix a 4-0 advantage.
• Stony Brook responded with a two-spot in the bottom of the first. The Seawolves were able to load the bases with no outs on a pair of singles and a walk before Elon induced the first out of the frame on a popup. An RBI single to left scratched the first run of the board for Stony Brook while a sac fly to center plated another run to cut the Phoenix's lead to two, 4-2.
• Elon answered with a two-run top of the second. The Phoenix loaded the bases with no outs after reaching with a pair of singles and a walk. Stony Brook induced the next two outs via a strikeout and a fielder's choice, but Elon avoided a double play on the fielder's choice as Drew Menscer was able to round second to score a run. Davis then added her second RBI with a double to right, moving Grant to home plate to put the Phoenix up 6-2.
• The Seawolves kept the attack going, scoring three more runs in the home half of the second to make it a one-run game. Stony Brook had the bags full with one out before a run scored off a wild pitch. A double to left field drove in two more runs before Elon escaped the jam with a strikeout and a fly out to take a 6-5 advantage to the third.
• After a scoring third, the Phoenix added some breathing room in the top of the fourth. After Elon had two runners reach with one out, Davis hit her fourth home run of the season with the three-run bomb pushing the Phoenix's lead to four, 9-5.
• The Seawolves continued to chip away however, scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning to make it a two-run game at the end of the sixth. After Stony Brook worked around a Phoenix double in the top half of the seventh, the Seawolves looked to repeat their fortunes from the opening game to earn a walk-off victory. Meredith Wells however prevented any late-game heroics as she retired the side in order to preserve the Phoenix's 9-7 win.
