Elon Offense Is Top Dog In Sunday Win Over A&T

Greensboro, N.C.- The Elon Phoenix (21-29, 10-14 CAA) jumped on the North Carolina A&T Aggies (24-26, 8-15 CAA) early with 10 runs through the first three innings. Elon held on to win, 17-12 and claimed another 10-win conference season.

James Broderick had a career day at World War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro. Broderick finished with a career high four hits including three-run home run and a double. Kenny Mallory Jr. finished his strong week with another multi-hit performance. Mallory Jr. put together a three-hit day including a lead-off home run to start the game.

Ryan Sprock and Will Vergantino also added home runs in the first two innings while Ryan Sprock picked up his second win on the mound with a six-strikeout performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Phoenix jumped out on the Aggies early and hit them hard. Kenny Mallory Jr. led off the game by taking the fourth pitch of the contest over the right field wall to give Elon the early 1-0 lead. Will Vergantino then singled home a run and with two outs, James Broderick lifted a home run to right to drive in three more runs.
  • Elon continued the onslaught in the second inning. Following a Tank Yaghoubi leadoff single, and an Alex Duffey fielder's choice, Ryan Sprock helped his own cause with another three-run home run to give Elon an 8-0 advantage. Will Vergantino capped the first two frames with a solo shot to go back-to-back with Sprock and give the Phoenix a 9-0 lead.
  • Following a clean inning from Sprock, James Broderick reached on a single and advanced to second on a fielding error. Yaghoubi then doubled down the left field line to score Broderick and give the Phoenix a 10-run lead.
  • A&T got on the board with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third.
  • The Phoenix countered with two runs in the top of the fourth. After loading the bases with no outs, Connor Offshack kept the Phoenix momentum going with a two-run RBI single to put Elon's lead at 12-3.
  • The Aggies put together a three-run stretch in the fourth and fifth innings to close the game to six by the sixth.
  • Elon continued to answer with more runs as in the top of the sixth as Tanner Holliman reached on an error by the shortstop which scored Connor Offshack.
  • After three runs from the Aggies in the bottom of the sixth, Elon put up four unanswered runs to strengthen the gap to eight runs. A Vergantino infield single combined with another fielding error brought home Mallory Jr. for the seventh inning run. Elon grabbed three more runs in the eighth following a leadoff double from James Broderick. Elon loaded the bases again with no outs and an infield single from Mallory would bring the first run home. Duffey and Sprock would both drive in runs in the eighth to give Elon a 17-9 lead.
  • A&T put up three runs to close the gap but could not make up the large deficit and Elon prevailed to take the series.
