Elon's Falls To No. 14 Stony Brook In The CAA Semifinals

Stony Brook, N.Y. – The Elon University lacrosse team returned to the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2021 but the Phoenix lost to No. 1 seed and No. 14-ranked Stony Brook 17-4 Thursday in the semifinals.
 
Stony Brook and Elon battled through a highly-competitive first half but the Seawolves pulled away with a five-goal flurry to open the third quarter. Elon's four-game winning streak came to a halt and the Phoenix's season ends at 9-8 on the year. Stony Brook improves to 16-2 on the season and will host the CAA Championship Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stony Brook scored the first two goals of the game but Elon got on the scoreboard as Mia Zebley found Ana Lee Vandiver for the opening Phoenix goal of the game.
  • The Seawolves built a 5-1 lead but Elon rallied with the next two goals. Zebley posted her second assist, finding Kaitlyn Michaud in front of net for the goal. Then Sammy Fisher created on her own for an early second quarter goal.
  • Stony Brook responded with a goal to make it 6-3 but Zebley recorded her third assist of the half on a goal from Kailey McKenna to make it 6-4.
  • The two teams traded possessions over the next five minutes without finding the back of the net, but Stony Brook was able to score a pair late for an 8-4 halftime advantage.
  • Stony Brook outscored Elon 5-0 in the third quarter and took a 13-4 lead into the fourth. The Seawolves added four more in the fourth to win 17-4.
 
NOTES AND STATS
  • Elon fell to 0-8 in 2024 when scoring 11 goals or fewer. On the flip side, the Phoenix was 9-0 when reaching at least 12 goals.
  • MJ Santa Barbara finished her freshman season with 151 draw control wins.
  • Freshman Mia Zebley scored 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists) over the final five games of the season after scoring 10 points in the first 12 games.
  • Zebley's three assists are the most for an Elon player in a conference tournament game.
  • Reagan Kuehn tied the program's freshman record with 24 caused turnovers in 2024.
  • Stony Brook outshot Elon 37-15 and had 20 ground balls to 12 for Elon.
  • The Seawolves led 12-10 in the draw circle.
  • Elon was 20-of-23 on clears, while Stony Brook was 20-of-24.
  • Stony Brook improved to 3-0 all-time against Elon with all three games coming in the past two seasons.
