Phoenix Setters Shine In Four-Set Win Over Norfolk State

ELON, N.C. – Kayla Palmer and Annabelle Schall recorded double-digit assists in tonight's four-set win over Norfolk State. Palmer led the team in aces with two and finished second in digs adding nine.

Elon 3, Norfolk State 1 (25-21,25-17,16-25,25-23)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Spartans came out to a fast 7-3 lead over the Phoenix to start the opening set. The Phoenix switched the momentum going on a 4-1 run to get within one at 8-7. From there the teams traded points and a Spartan service error tied the score at 11-11. The teams went back and forth with no team leading by more than two, but with the score tied at 21-21, Elon went on a 4-0 run, and a solo block from Cameron Lanier ended set one with the Phoenix on top 25-21.
  • Elon started off strong going up 8-2 to start the second set. There was no slowing down the Phoenix as they expanded their lead to as much as seven leading 14-7 midway through the frame. The Spartans tried to overcome the deficit, but it was too much as Elon maintained their seven-point lead late in the set at 20-13. Three straight Phoenix points ended the set 25-17 capped by a kill from Lily Barker.
  • The Phoenix fell behind 7-3 early in set three. The Spartans gained momentum going up 12-6 and eventually extending their lead to ten at 18-8. The Phoenix could not get into a rhythm and fell 25-16 in set three.
  • With the score tied 4-4 in set four, Annabelle Scall went on a 5-0 run to put the Phoenix ahead 8-4. The teams exchanged points and a kill from Sydney Love put Elon up 15-10 forcing a Norfolk State timeout. From there, Schall rallied off four more points as the Phoenix gained their largest lead of the set, up eight at 18-10. The Spartans put together a late 9-3 run of their own and got within two at 21-19. Again, each team traded points until a solo block from Barker forced the Spartans to take their final timeout. The Phoenix wasted no time out of the timeout and a Catherine Rucker kill sealed the set and match with Elon winning 25-23.
NOTES
  • Sydney Love added double-digit kills for the fifth time this season leading the team with 12 on the night. Catherine Rucker followed with seven kills, one shy of her career high.
