Volleyball Defeats Presbyterian To Split On Day One Of Mercer Invitational

MACON, Ga. – The Elon University volleyball team defeated Presbyterian in a five-set thriller match Friday night after falling to Mercer in three sets earlier to split on day one of the Mercer Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Bears came out to a fast 8-3 lead to force an Elon timeout. Coming from the timeout, Mercer extended their lead to eight at 11-3. With the score at 17-8, Elon went on a 3-0 to cut the deficit to six at 17-11 thanks to two kills from Cameron Lanier. The Phoenix would only rally off three more points and fell in the opening set 25-14.
  • Two Mercer attacking errors started the second set giving Elon a 2-0 lead. From there, the Bears went on a 6-1 run to lead 8-3. Mercer won seven of the next 11 points to go up 15-7. The Phoenix struggled to gain momentum and fell behind 20-9 late in the set and eventually dropped set two 25-11.
  • The Phoenix got out to a 4-1 lead to begin set three thanks to an ace from Abigail Sparkman and kills from Kyla Johnson, Sydney Love and Anna Sewell. The Bears tied the score at 4-4 and later gained a 7-5 lead. From there, Elon tied the score at 7-7 with back-to-back blocks. Again, Mercer pulled ahead two with the Phoenix quickly knotting the score at 9-9 and took a one-point lead at 10-9 with an ace from Shannon O'Laughlin. The Bears won five of the next seven points to lead 14-11 before Elon put together a 3-1 run to get back within one at 15-14. Mercer went on a 4-1 run to pull ahead 19-15 late in the set and would keep that lead the rest of the set, winning the set and match 25-18.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Blue Hose came out to a quick 6-1 lead forcing a Phoenix timeout. The Phoenix fought back to get within three at 9-6, but again Presbyterian extended their lead to 13-7. Elon won seven of the next nine points to get within one at 15-14. The Blue Hose went back up 18-15, but Elon won three straight points thanks to kills from Sydney Love and Cameron Lanier, along with a Shannon O'Laughlin ace to knot the frame at 18-18. Down 19-18, Elon went on a 3-0 run to go up 21-19 and force a Blue Hose timeout. Out of the time out, Presbyterian went on a 6-2 run to take the opening set 25-23.
  • Presbyterian went up 5-2 early in set two, but Elon quickly went on a 4-1 run to tie the score at 6-6. Down 8-6, Elon scored five straight points thanks to kills from Lindsey Harris, Clara LaRue and Love, an Elon block and a LaRue ace to gain an 11-8 advantage. From there, the Phoenix won eight of the next 10 points to pull ahead 19-10. The Blue Hose slowly chipped at the lead but could not overcome the deficit as a block from Harris and Catherine Rucker ended set two with Elon on top 25-16.
  • With the score knotted at 3-3, the Phoenix scored five straight points to go up 8-3. The teams traded points before Elon went on a 4-1 run to gain their biggest lead of the match at 17-8 to force a Presbyterian timeout. Elon came out of the timeout on a 5-2 run going up double-digits at 22-11. The Blue Hose went on a 4-1 run of their own, but it was not enough as a kill from Love and a Blue Hose error ended set three with Elon winning 25-15.
  • Presbyterian went ahead 11-1 to start set four. The teams traded points, but the Blue Hose maintained a strong lead midway through the set up 16-5. Elon won three straight points thanks to kills from Love and Harris to cut the lead to eight at 16-8, but the Blue Hose quickly regained their momentum going up 20-8. Elon went on a late 9-3 run but could not close the gap and fell in set four 25-18.
  • Two aces from Annabelle Schall helped Elon come out to a 5-1 lead in set five. The Blue Hose won four of the next six points to cut their deficit to two at 7-5. A block from Cameron Lanier put the Phoenix up 8-5 to switch sides. After the switch, Presbyterian went on a 6-1 to gain a slight 11-8 advantage. The Phoenix only allowed one more Blue Hose point with a Love kill ending the set and match 15-12.
NOTES 
  • Sydney Love tallied a team-high 14 kills followed by Clara LaRue and Cameron Lanier who added season-highs with 13 kills.
  • Annabelle Schall, Kayla Palmer and Caroline Doyle recorded double-doubles. Schall's fourth double-double of the season included a team-high 22 assists and 14 digs while Palmer tallied 20 assists and 14 digs in her third double-double of the season. Doyle tallied 11 assists and 11 digs on the night for her second of the season.
  • Caroline Berlekamp and Love paced the Phoenix with four blocks apiece, while Lindsey Harris added three blocks and matched her season-high in kills with six.
  • Shannon O'Laughlin and Schall led the team with three aces, followed by Abigail Sparkman with two.
  • As a team, Elon outnumbered Presbyterian in kills (61-45), aces (10-7), assists (59-41) and digs (65-61).
UP NEXT 
  • The maroon and gold return to Hawkins Arena tomorrow for an 11:00 a.m. matchup against Southern Mississippi.
