The Golden Eagles quickly tied the score back at 7-7 and from there it was a battle to the finish. Each team traded points, with Elon holding the biggest lead with two at 12-10. Again, Southern Mississippi tied the score at 13-13 and later would go up 18-16 to force an Elon timeout. Elon then went on a 5-1 run to go up 21-19. The Golden Eagles knotted the score at 23-23 but eventually, a Caroline Berlekamp kill ended set one with the Phoenix on top 26-24.

Southern Mississippi won three straight points to cut the Phoenix lead to one at 13-12 but a 3-1 run from Elon put their lead to three at 16-13. The Golden Eagles tied the score at 18-18 followed by back-to-back aces to gain a 20-18 lead.
