A Strong Blocking Performance Not Enough As Elon Falls In CAA Opener

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team matched their best blocking performance so far this season with 11 team blocks, but ultimately fell in their CAA opener to the Charleston Cougars in four sets on Saturday afternoon.

Elon 1, Charleston 3 (18-25, 25-22, 20-25, 11-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With the Phoenix up 5-3 in the opening set, Charleston went on a 5-0 run to gain an 8-5 lead. Down 10-6, Elon won five of the next six points to regain their lead at 11-10. The teams traded points before three straight Phoenix points, capped by a block from Sydney Love and Caroline Berlekamp, saw the Phoenix ahead 15-12 midway through the frame. The Cougars responded again with a 9-0 run to lead 21-15. Elon could only rally off three more points as Charleston took set one 25-18.
  • The Cougars gained a strong 7-2 advantage to force an Elon timeout. Out of the break, the teams went back and forth until the Phoenix got within four at 11-7 before putting together a 4-0 to get within one at 12-11. Charleston pulled ahead extending their lead to four at 15-11, but again Elon responded with a 4-0 run that included two blocks from Kyla Johnson and Cameron Lanier along with a service ace from Casey Brower, to knot the score at 15-15. It was back-and-forth until Charleston pulled ahead 21-19 late in the set; however, the Phoenix ended the set on a 6-1 run capped by another block from Johnson and Love to win set two 25-22.
  • The Cougars led 7-2 to open set three but a 5-1 run from the Phoenix saw them within one at 8-7. With the score 10-7 in favor of the Cougars, Elon won five of the next six points to gain a 12-11 lead. Elon was able to capitalize on the momentum and later extend their lead to four up 18-14. From there, Charleston flipped the switch and went on an 11-2 run to go up and take the third set 25-20.
  • The fourth set followed a similar pattern as the previous sets with Charleston going up 7-2. From there, the Cougars extended their lead to 13-5 and forced Elon to take their second timeout of the set. The Phoenix could not find any momentum and trailed 23-9 late in the set, eventually falling 25-11 in set four to end the match.
NOTES UP NEXT
  • The Phoenix return to Schar Center tomorrow September 22, at 1:00 p.m. for match two against the Cougars.
