Elon Controls Service Line, Drops Four-Set Match To Charleston

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team recorded a season-best 13 aces against the Cougars, but ultimately came up short, falling in four sets Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Elon got a quick 6-2 lead in the opening set over the Cougars. Charleston went on a 5-1 run to get within one at 7-6 but Elon pulled back ahead 10-7. The teams traded points, with Elon up 14-11 Charleston compiled a 4-1 run to knot the score at 15-15 midway through the frame. Later with the score knotted at 19-19, the Cougars won back-to-back points to force an Elon timeout. Out of the break, Elon scored three straight points thanks to a Charleston error and back-to-back aces from Ericka Link to regain the lead at 22-21. The Cougars rallied off two points, but it wasn't enough as a kill from Caroline Berlekamp ended set one with the Phoenix on top 25-23.
  • Back-to-back aces from Berlekamp gave Elon a slight 3-2 edge at the start of set two. From there Charleston went on a 7-2 run to gain a 9-5 lead. The teams went back and forth out of the Elon timeout, but the Cougars went on a 4-0 midway through the frame to go up 15-8. The Phoenix cut the Charleston lead to six with an ace from Shannon O'Laughlin at 16-10. Later, Elon got within four at 21-17 thanks to a kill from Love, a block from Kyla Johnson and Cameron Lanier, and a service ace from Clara LaRue forcing a Charleston timeout. The Cougars pulled ahead 24-19, but Elon rallied off three set points eventually falling 25-22 in set two.  
  • Early in the third set, Charleston controlled the momentum, leading 7-4. The Cougars won nine of the next 12 points extending their lead to 16-7. Ultimately the Phoenix came up short as the Cougars closed out set three, 25-11.
  • The Phoenix responded and began set four with a 7-3 advantage. Charleston later won four straight points to tie the score at 9-9 before kills from Love and Catherine Rucker put Elon up two. The Cougars followed with a 5-1 and gained a two-point lead at 14-12 forcing a Phoenix timeout. With the Cougars up 16-13, Elon scored two straight points to get within one, but Charleston followed with a 4-1 run to go up 20-16. The Phoenix won the next three points to get back within one at 20-19. The teams traded points, but Elon fell short 25-22 in the final set.  
NOTES  UP NEXT 
  • The Phoenix hit the road to UNCW on September 28-29, to take on the Seahawks. Saturday's match is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. and Sunday's match will start at 2:00 p.m.
