Volleyball Defeats UNCW In Straight Sets Saturday

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team fought from behind late in set three on Saturday afternoon to defeat the Seahawks in straight sets and earn their first sweep in CAA play.

Elon 3, UNCW 0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-23)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Elon got out to a quick 7-3 lead over the Seahawks in the opening set. UNCW went on to get within two at 9-7, but a kill from Caroline Berlekamp and a Seahawk error put Elon back up four to force a UNCW timeout. Out of the timeout, the Phoenix kept momentum going on a 6-2 run extending their lead to seven at 16-9. Back-to-back kills from Cameron Lanier and Clara LaRue saw Elon in front 20-11 late in the frame. UNCW won six of the next nine points to get back within five points at 23-18. From there, back-to-back Seahawk errors ended set one with Elon winning 25-18.
  • Early in set two, UNCW led 5-2 and kept that momentum to go up 8-4 and force an Elon timeout. Out of the break, the Phoenix went on a 6-0 run to gain their second lead of the set at 10-8. Elon won four of the next six points extending their lead to 14-10. The teams traded points before a kill from LaRue and a UNCW attacking error forced the Seahawks to take a timeout with the Phoenix up 19-14. Later, UNCW went on a 5-2 run to get within four late in the frame at 23-19, but Elon only allowed two more points taking set two 25-21.
  • The teams went back and forth to open set three. With the score tied 7-7, UNCW went on a 4-1 run to take an 11-8 advantage. Elon got within two at 13-11 but the Seahawks went on a 3-0 run extending their lead to 16-11. Elon won five of the next seven points to cut the Seahawk lead back to two at 18-16. From there it was a back-and-forth battle until Elon went on a 4-0 run, thanks to two kills from Berlekamp and two opponent errors taking slight 23-22 advantage. The Seahawks tied the score at 23-23 and that's all they would get as a UNCW error and solo block from Sydney Love ended the match with the Phoenix sweeping the Seahawks 25-23.
