History Made! Tendler Breaks All-Time Wins Record As Volleyball Defeats UNCW 3-0

ELON, N.C. – Elon University head volleyball coach Mary Tendler became the program's all-time wins leader with her 307th as the Phoenix swept UNCW Sunday afternoon 25-23, 25-16, 25-23. Tendler passed Susan Leonard, who won 306 matches from 1988-02.

"Mary's impact extends far beyond the volleyball court, profoundly shaping the lives of countless student-athletes and leaving a lasting imprint on the entire Elon community," Elon Director of Athletics Jenn Strawley said. "Her leadership, dedication and passion have been an integral part of the success of our athletics program, and she embodies the values of Elon in everything she does. I am absolutely thrilled for Mary and her remarkable achievement, and I congratulate her on becoming the all-time winningest volleyball coach in Elon history."

Elon 3, UNCW 0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-23)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams traded points to open the set before a 6-1 run from the Phoenix put them ahead 10-5. UNCW got within two at 10-5 but Elon won three straight points thanks to kills from Caroline Berlekamp and Cameron Lanier, and a block from Berlekamp and Lindsey Harris to extend their lead back to five at 13-8. With the score 16-10, the Seahawks compiled a 4-0 run to cut the Phoenix lead to two and force an Elon timeout. Out of the break, the teams went back-and-forth but a kill from Catherine Rucker and another block from Berlekamp and Lanier gave the Phoenix a 21-18 advantage. With the score 21-20, Elon was able to keep control at 24-22 and a kill from Clara LaRue ended set one with Elon winning 25-23.
  • It was back-and-forth between the teams to start set two. With the score knotted at 5-5, Elon put together a 5-1 run capped by a Kayla Palmer ace and Berlekamp kill to go up three at 9-6. From there, UNCW worked further to get within two at 11-9 but three straight Elon points, thanks to a pair of kills and a block from Lanier and Rucker saw the Phoenix ahead 14-9. Elon won four of the next six points forcing a Seahawks timeout late in the frame with the score 18-11. Out of the timeout, Elon won four straight points gaining their first double-digit lead of the set at 22-11. UNCW went on a late 4-0 run, but it wasn't enough as the second set ended with the Phoenix on top 25-16.
  • The third set saw a similar start with neither team leading by more than two until back-to-back Phoenix kills saw Elon ahead 6-4. UNCW won six of the next eight points to gain a 10-8 advantage. Again, the teams traded points, but the Phoenix went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 17-13 late in the frame. UNCW worked to get back within two at 18-16 but a kill from Lanier and a block from LaRue sparked the momentum back for Elon as they led 20-16. The Seahawks went on a 6-2 run to tie the score at 22-22, but a UNCW service error put Elon out in front by one at 23-22. A kill from Lanier gave Elon set point and another Seahawks service error sealed the match with Elon sweeping the Seahawks 25-23.
