An All-Around Career-High Night Pushes Phoenix Past Gardner-Webb, Tendler Earns 300th Win

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team had four players reach career-high stats in tonight's five set win over Gardner-Webb.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Both teams traded points and timeouts until the score was deadlocked at 17-17. From there, the Phoenix went on a 4-1 run to pull ahead 21-18 and did not look back. Back-to-back aces from Annabelle Schall sealed the opening set for Elon 25-20.
  • The maroon and gold got out to a quick 7-3 lead over the Runnin' Bulldogs in set two before Gardner-Webb cut the Elon lead to two at 8-6.  The Phoenix then went on a 5-1 run to go up 13-7. Later, four straight points from Elon extended their lead to 17-9 late in the set. The Runnin' Bulldogs tried to make a comeback getting within three at 22-19 but only rallied off one more point as a kill from Sydney Love ended set two with the Phoenix on top 25-20.
  • Neither team could pull ahead to start off set three, but with the score knotted at 9-9 Gardner-Webb went on a 4-1 run to lead 13-10. The Runnin' Bulldogs gained even more momentum and stretched their lead to as much as four at 17-13. The Phoenix rallied back to tie the score at 21-21 but was not enough as Gardner-Webb took set four 25-23.
  • Again, it was a back-and-forth battle to start set four. With the score tied at 7-7, Gardner-Webb went on a 6-2 run to lead by four at 13-9. Elon again fought back going on an 8-1 run to take the lead 17-14. It was a battle of runs from their as each team took turns on top, but with the score tied 22-22, Gardner-Webb scored three straight points to take set four 25-22.
  • Elon came out hot in set five taking a quick 8-3 over the Runnin' Bulldogs. Gardner-Webb tried to respond with a 3-1 run but a block from Caroline Berlekamp and Keira Kasten quickly ended their momentum. With the score at 12-9 the Phoenix scored three straight points to take home the match 15-9 in the final set.  
NOTES 
  • Sydney Love led the team in kills with a career-high 24 kills, followed by Kiera Kasten (22) and Lily Barker (10) who also tallied career-highs.
  • Annabelle Schall tallied a team-high 44 assists and four aces while also adding 17 digs to record her second double-double of the season. Kayla Palmer followed adding 16 assists.
  • Caroling Doyle paced the Phoenix with a career-high 27 digs while also adding two aces.
  • Barker also recorded a career-high in blocks with five to lead the team, followed by Caroline Berlekamp and Kyla Johnson with four.
  • Love and Kasten's 20-plus kills mark the first time a pair of Phoenix teammates surpassed the 20-kill mark since Oct. 23, 2022.
 UP NEXT 
  • The maroon and gold will host the Elon Phoenix Classic next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6-7 at Schar Center. Elon will face Murray State Friday at 7:00 p.m. for Neighborhood Night before playing a pair of matches on Saturday against North Carolina Central at 10:00 a.m. and UNCG at 3:30 p.m.
