Volleyball Drops Opening Match Of Elon Phoenix Classic

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team fell in their opening match of the Elon Phoenix Classic to Murray State on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Two quick aces from Annabelle Schall saw the Phoenix ahead of the Racers 4-1 early in set one. Murray State went on a 5-0 to take back the lead 7-4. Elon battled back eventually tying the score at 10-10. Each team traded points and timeouts before Murray State took a slight 18-15 lead. The Phoenix chipped away at the lead but couldn't overcome the deficit falling 25-19 in set one.
  • Again, Elon gained a fast 7-3 lead over Murray State but an 8-3 run from the Racers gave them a one point lead at 11-10. Attacking errors from the Phoenix put the Racers up 17-14, but a 3-0 run capped by a block from Clara LaRue and Kyla Johnson tied the score at 17-17. The teams traded points again with Murray State eventually pulling ahead 24-21, but Elon saved three set points to knot the score at 24-24. It was a battle to the finish, but Murray State came out on top taking set two 28-26.
  • The Racers came out to an 8-3 lead to start the third set. Murray State kept the momentum going up 16-9 midway through the frame and would keep the lead taking the set and match 25-12.
 
NOTES 
  • Cameron Laner tallied a team-high eight kills followed by Kyla Johnson who tied her career-high with seven kills.
  • Annabelle Schall and Casey Brower led the team with two aces apiece. Schall finished with double-digit assists for the fifth consecutive game with 21 assists.  
  • Sydney Love and Johnson paced the team with four blocks followed by Caroline Berlekamp with three.
  • Caroline Doyle continues to lead the team in digs adding five on the night.
 
UP NEXT 
  • The maroon and gold return to Schar Center tomorrow for a pair of matches against North Carolina Central at 10:00 a.m. and UNCG at 7:00 p.m.
