Rising Phoenix: This Week In Elon Athletics

ELON, N.C. –  It's an action-packed week ahead for Phoenix fans, with three basketball games in Schar Center and the beginning of the spring season for the Elon University women's tennis team.

Each Monday, Rising Phoenix will preview the week ahead in Elon athletics. Here is a look at each Elon team competing this week.

Men's Basketball
The Elon University men's basketball team will play three games this upcoming week, with the first being featured on CBS Sports Network on Monday, Jan. 12 at 9 p.m. The Phoenix will host the Campbell Camels, the first of two meetings between the squads in 2025. Elon will then head on the road, facing Drexel on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. and Delaware on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. Last time on the court, senior forward Sam Sherry earned his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds against the William & Mary Tribe.

Women's Tennis
To open up its spring season, the Elon University women's tennis team will compete in two road matches this weekend. The Phoenix will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia to face Liberty on Friday, Jan. 17 at 10 a.m. and Longwood on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 9 a.m. In the fall, senior Miray Konar and junior Helen Sarikulaya became the first players in Elon history to advance to the doubles semifinals at the ITA Carolina Regionals. 

Women's Basketball
After a 59-51 victory over Hampton for its second conference victory of the season, the Elon University women's basketball team will be staying home this week for two matchups in Schar Center. Against Hampton, freshman guard Jayda Angel led the Phoenix with 15 points, followed by senior forward Iycez Adams and redshirt freshman center Ava Leroux who both had 10. Leroux and Angel contributed with 25 of the 33 points off the bench for the Phoenix. Elon will host Stony Brook on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. and Hofstra on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. for its annual Princess Day game.

Track & Field
For the first time in 2025, the Elon University track & field team is competing and will travel just down the road to Winston-Salem for the Mondo College Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 9:30 a.m. The Phoenix ended 2024 strong, with senior Jazlyn Jefferson being named the CAA Field Athlete of the Week following her 39-feet-7 triple jump at the Liberty Kickoff. Senior Mikayla Jones broke the school record in the 5,000 with a time of 16:24.07 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Invitational. Sophomore Hannah Weber and senior Madison Synowiec earned the eighth-fastest and ninth-fastest times in the 5,000 in program history after running 16:48.64 and 16:52.39, respectively.
