Elon Falls To William & Mary

ELON, N.C. — The Elon women's basketball team (11-8, 5-3 CAA) suffered a 64-59 setback versus William & Mary (9-10, 6-2 CAA) on Friday night, inside Schar Center.

THE RUNDOWN
  • The Tribe gained a quick 6-2 lead, but the Phoenix responded with a 10-0 run to go ahead 12-6. Back-to-back William & Mary baskets closed the first quarter with Elon leading 12-10.
  • William & Mary started the second quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 19-12 advantage. A Regina Walton three-pointer ended the Tribe's run, bringing Elon within four at 19-15 with 6:59 remaining in the half. The teams went back and forth before a 12-2 run from the Phoenix, including two three-pointers from Ashlee Shaw, put them ahead 31-27. The teams continued to trade baskets, and Elon entered halftime leading 33-29.
  • A 10-3 run by the Tribe quickly put them ahead 39-37 with 7:01 remaining in the third quarter. Elon responded with back-to-back scores from Iycez Adams and Raven Preston to regain a two-point lead at 41-39. A second-chance three-pointer from Jayda Angel, followed by back-to-back layups from Preston, extended the Phoenix's lead to 48-40. William & Mary then went on a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to two at 48-46. Angel sank three free throws to put the Phoenix up 51-46 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
  • The Tribe went on a 13-0 run in the fourth quarter to take a 57-51 lead with 3:01 remaining in the game. An Adams layup, followed by back-to-back scores from Angel, brought the Phoenix within two at 59-57 with 2:02 left. However, William & Mary managed to hold off Elon, securing a 64-59 victory.
NOTES
  • Ava Leroux returned to the starting lineup alongside Iycez Adams, Laila Anderson, Maraja Pass, and Raven Preston.
  • Jayda Angel led the team in scoring for the seventh time this season, finishing with 14 points, six rebounds, and two steals.
  • Preston recorded a career-high 19 rebounds to lead the team, while Ashlee Shaw grabbed a season-high seven.
  • Preston's 19 rebounds were the most for any Elon player since Kelsey Evans had 21 rebounds in the 2012-13 season.
  • Adams (10) and Preston (12) both scored in double figures, while Shaw added seven points, going a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc in the first half.
  • The Phoenix dominated the boards, outrebounding the Tribe 55-34.
