CARY, N.C. – Elon University men's tennis senior
Veljko Krstic finished third in the singles event at ITA Carolina Regionals after advancing to the semifinals Sunday. The tournament is being contested at Cary Tennis Park.
Krstic moved through to the final four in the singles draw Sunday morning with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory over South Carolina's Lucas Andrade da Silva, the No. 64 ranked player in the current ITA singles rankings.
The semifinal victory over da Silva was Krstic's fourth of the week after beating opponents from North Carolina, Charlotte and Clemson in the first three rounds of the draw. Krstic defeated a pair of top 65 ranked opponents on his way to the semifinals.
Krstic won the first set of his afternoon semifinal versus Wake Forest's Luca Pow in a tiebreak, 7-6 (5), but dropped the next two sets, 2-6, 4-6. He secured third place in the singles competition via a walkover from Kacper Szymkowiak of Wake Forest.
Krstic became the first Elon player to advance to the singles semifinals or further at ITA Regionals since Cameron Silverman made the semis in 2013.
With four victories this week, Krstic is up to eight victories this fall. He had won seven straight matches before his semifinal defeat Sunday.
In total, Elon won 11 matches at ITA Regionals, with eight wins in singles and three in doubles.
