Corbett and Watkins Lead Phoenix to Exhibition Victory

Box Score ELON, N.C. — Newcomers LaNae' Corbett and Tamia Watkins made an immediate impact in their first game for Elon University, guiding the Phoenix to a 70-59 victory over Winston-Salem State in an exhibition matchup Tuesday evening.

Corbett led the team with 18 points and five rebounds, while Jayda Angel and Watkins each added 13 points.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Tyana Walker opened the game with a three-pointer to give Elon an early lead. Makayla Waleed hit two free throws for Winston-Salem State, but Elon responded with a quick run capped by another Walker three to go up 10–2. The Rams closed the gap briefly, but late baskets from Tamia Watkins and Quinzia Fulmore helped Elon finish the quarter ahead 16–7.
  • LaNae' Corbett scored first in the second quarter with a jumper before a run fueled by Jayda Angel and Corbett pushed Elon's lead to 23–9. Despite a short rally from Winston-Salem State, Elon ended the half strong with baskets from Ashanti Fox and Watkins, leading 39–22 at halftime.
  • Corbett continued to pace the Phoenix with multiple layups, extending Elon's lead to 49–31 midway through the third quarter. Watkins added 11 points in her first game, keeping Elon strong in the paint with a 57–43 advantage entering the fourth.
  • After trading baskets, Elon went on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 66–53 with 3:45 remaining. Watkins added key free throws, and Angel capped the scoring with a late jumper to secure a 70–59 exhibition win.
NOTES
  • Jayda Angel, LaNae' Corbett, Quinzia Fulmore, Maraja Pass, and Tyana Walker started for the Phoenix.
  • Corbett led the team in her Elon debut with 18 points, five rebounds, and four steals, shooting a team-best 67 percent (8-for-12) from the field.
  • Angel and Watkins contributed 13 points each, joining Corbett in double figures.
  • Fox, Fulmore, and Walker combined for 12 points in their first appearances for Elon.
