HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Elon University volleyball team was handed its first setback in CAA play as the Phoenix fell at Hofstra in straight sets (19-25, 26-28, 17-25) on Saturday at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

Elon (4-10, 2-1 CAA) was led offensively by the duo of
Clara Simmons and
Catherine Rucker with nine kills each. Rucker added three total blocks to her stat line while having a .500 hitting percentage.
April Rice and
Kayla Palmer both had 14 assists for the Phoenix.

Hofstra (10-2, 3-2 CAA) had three players reach double-digit kills with Beatriz Braga leading the squad with a match-high 18 kills. Izadora Stedile added 15 kills while Constanza Perez Sain contributed with 10, with the Pride posting a .324 attack percentage compared to a .135 percentage for the Phoenix.

THE RUNDOWN
- Hofstra used a 6-0 run to break an early 5-5 tie and take an 11-5 lead in the first set. The Pride extended their advantage to 13-7 before Elon responded with a 6-2 run to pull within three at 15-12 following a Cameron Lanier kill. A 3-0 Phoenix spurt, capped by an April Rice service ace, trimmed the deficit to 20-17, but Hofstra answered with a 3-0 run of its own to close out the set with a 25-19 win.
- The second set featured 21 ties in a tightly contested frame. Elon took a 3-1 lead early before the Pride rallied to even things at 4-4. Hofstra twice held a two-point edge, including at 21-19, but the Phoenix tied it again at 21-all on a block assist from Caroline Carlsen and Caroline Berlekamp. After a Hofstra service error, Elon capitalized with a 3-0 run to reach set point at 24-22. The hosts fought back to tie the set at 24-24, and despite Elon taking a brief 25-24 advantage, Hofstra finished on a 4-1 run to win 28-26 and take a 2-0 match lead.
- Hofstra took an early 8-3 lead in the third set, forcing the Phoenix to a timeout. Elon battled to pull within three, 10-7, but the Pride expanded its lead with a 3-0 run. The Phoenix pulled within four, 18-12, after a Simmons kill but Hofstra used a 4-0 advantage to take a double-digit lead, 22-12, before closing out the match with the 25-17 win in the third set for the sweep.
NOTES AND STATS
- Rucker's nine kills were one off her career-high of 10 she set last season versus Southern Miss. It was also the eight match of the year with three or more total blocks for the Chapel Hill native.
- Hofstra improves its all-time series ledger over the Phoenix to 13-5 including an 9-0 record on its home floor.
- Casey Brower appeared in her first match for the Phoenix since Sept. 2 at Appalachian State. The sophomore recorded five digs versus the Pride.Â
