Elon Wins Thriller At Campbell

Clark Accounts For Four Touchdowns, Phoenix Rally For 31-24 Victory

BUIES CREEK – Landen Clark threw a 96-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass to Isaiah Fuhrmann with a little more than one minute remaining to lead the Elon football team to a dramatic 31-24 road victory at Campbell on Saturday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.

The Phoenix (5-6, 3-4 CAA) piled up 385 yards of total offense and forced a pair of crucial turnovers while the Camels (2-9, 2-5) erased a 14-point deficit before Elon delivered two late touchdowns to reclaim the lead for good. Clark accounted for four total touchdowns – two through the air and two on the ground – while passing for 228 yards and rushing for another 59.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Elon struck midway through the opening quarter. Facing a short field after its defense forced a turnover on downs, the Phoenix marched 47 yards in six plays and scored when Clark hit Dylan Magazu for a 10-yard touchdown with 8:22 left in the first. Campbell answered with a 21-yard field goal to trim the lead to 7-3.

  • The Phoenix dominated the second quarter behind long, sustained drives. Clark capped a 12-play, 85-yard series with a 21-yard rushing touchdown at the 13:35 mark, extending the lead to 14-3. After the defense forced another stop, the Phoenix pieced together another 85-yard drive, this one ending with a 28-yard field goal by Luke Barnes to take a 17-3 advantage into halftime.

  • Momentum swung briefly out of halftime when Campbell's Trayjen Llanas-Wilcox returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown, pulling the Camels within 17-10 just a minute and a half into the third. Elon's defense, however, buckled down and did not allow another score in the period.

  • Campbell surged ahead early in the fourth with back-to-back touchdown drives – a 3-yard run by Naieem Kearney and a 2-yard run by Kamden Sixkiller – to take its first lead of the day at 24-17 with 8:06 remaining.

  • Elon responded immediately. Clark engineered a 12-play, 70-yard drive and tied the game on a 19-yard touchdown scramble with 2:50 to go. Six plays into Campbell's following drive, Asher Cunningham forced a fumble by Sixkiller and Ishmel Atkins came up with the recovery at Elon's own five-yard line with 1:23 on the clock. On the second snap of Elon's drive, Clark found Fuhrmann streaking down the sideline for a 96-yard touchdown, giving the Phoenix a 31-24 lead with 1:07 left.

  • DJ James-Hamilton sealed the victory with an interception on Campbell's final drive.

NOTES & STATS

  • Elon improves to 4-0 all-time against Campbell. The Phoenix has won all three matchups with the Camels as CAA opponents.

  • Elon's three-straight wins over a singular CAA opponent is tied for the longest streak under Tony Trisciani. The winning streak versus Campbell is tied with streaks over William & Mary (2022-24) and Delaware (2019-23).

  • Kahmari Brown set the Elon, single-season sack record with 1.5 sacks on Saturday. Brown's season sack total is now 9.5, which eclipses the previous record of 8.5 sacks.

  • Landen Clark compiled 287 yards of offense in the win. His 228 yards passing were the most in a game for Clark since his 305 yards at Western Carolina earlier this season. His 59 rushing yards gives him five games this season with 50-plus rushing yards.

  • Clark lit up the scoreboard with four touchdowns against Campbell. His first rushing score gave him seven games this season with a rushing touchdown. His second rushing score gave him his second game with multiple rushing scores (Western Carolina). His two passing touchdowns gave Clark his fifth game with multiple passing touchdowns.

  • Jimmyll Williams carried the ball an Elon career high 20 times on Saturday. Williams led the Phoenix with 79 rushing yards.

  • Dylan Magazu hauled in his second touchdown catch of the season. In two career games against Campbell, Magazu has caught a touchdown pass in each.
