Phoenix Defeats North Dakota At Paradise Jam

Balanced Offensive Effort Leads Elon Past Fighting Hawks

Box Score ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – The Elon women's basketball team earned a hard-fought win over North Dakota on Friday, using a balanced offensive effort and strong team defense to claim a 65-57 victory at the Paradise Jam.

Tamia Watkins led Elon with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Elon, which was dealt a 64-61 loss to Tulane on the first day of the event, bounced back and improved to 3-4 overall on the season. North Dakota moved to 1-7.

THE RUNDOWN
  • North Dakota opened on a 5-0 run, but three straight Elon baskets pushed the Phoenix ahead 7-5 with 5:35 left in the first quarter. The Fighting Hawks responded with a 10-0 run to take a 15-7 lead after one.
  • Elon answered in the second, using an 11-3 spurt sparked by Laila Anderson and Watkins to go up 22-18. After trading baskets, the Phoenix closed the half with another 11-3 run to lead 35-24.
  • North Dakota began the third on a 10-3 push to cut the deficit to 38-34 and later tied it at 40-40. Back-to-back Watkins buckets put Elon back in front 43-41 heading into the fourth.
  • Both sides traded scores in the final period. With Elon up 56-53, Maraja Pass hit consecutive threes to extend the margin to 62-54, and the Phoenix closed out the win at the free-throw line.
NOTES
  • Tamia Watkins reached double figures for the second time this season with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting and added a team-high seven rebounds.
  • Maraja Pass scored nine points, went 2-for-2 from three, and led the team with two steals.
  • Laila Anderson, LaNae' Corbett and Quinzia Fulmore each added eight points; Fulmore also posted a team-high three assists.
  • Elon shot 31.3% (5-for-16) from three, its second straight game above 30% from deep.
  • The Phoenix forced a season-high 27 turnovers, the most by an opponent this year.
  • Elon dominated the offensive boards, 13-4.
