Charlotte Hands Women's Tennis 4-0 Defeat

Elon, N.C. - The Elon women's tennis team hosted Charlotte on Friday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center for their seventh spring season match. While the doubles matches looked promising, Charlotte secured the doubles point, ultimately handing the Phoenix their first home loss, 4-0. The win moves Charlotte to 7-2, dropping Elon to 5-2. 

Doubles Recap: The Phoenix picked up a win at No. 2 doubles, but the 49ers ultimately took the doubles point. 
 
Singles Recap: Elon led in the third set of all three matches that went unfinished, but Charlotte swept the first three to earn the team victory.
  • At No. 1, Simone Bergeron faced Ni Xi. Xi won the first set 6-4, but Bergeron returned in the second set, winning 6-3. The third set went unfinished, ending with Bergeron up 5-2. 
  • At No. 2, Helen Sarikulaya was defeated in both sets by Sarah Suchankova, 6-3, 7-5.
  • At No. 3, Heidi Bulger was defeated in both sets by Lucia Aranda, 7-5, 6-2. 
  • At No. 4, Mariana Reding was defeated in both sets by Amira Badawi, 6-4, 6-2. 
  • At No. 5, Madison Cordisco faced Shona Nakano, winning the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (4). Cordisco lost the second set 6-1 and was up 2-0 in the third when the match went unfinished. 
  • At No. 6, Lisa Kranec faced Prisca Abbas, losing in the first set, 7-5. Kranec won the second set 6-3, but the match went unfinished, with Kranec up 3-2 in the third set. 

Up next: The Phoenix now prepares to face Furman at home on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Originally scheduled for Feb. 15, the match was postponed due to weather. Furman is 5-1, with their only loss being to Wake Forest, 4-1. Before Furman faces the Phoenix, they will play at Virginia Tech for their seventh spring season match.
