Elon, N.C. - The Elon University women's tennis team put on a show at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and started a triple header weekend strong by defeating Shaw 5-0 and Salem 7-0. The Phoenix's two victories improved their record to 7-2, as Shaw and Salem both dropped their first matches of the spring.
MATCH 1: Shaw
Doubles Recap: The Phoenix quickly asserted their dominance and secured the doubles point, winning all three matches.
- At No. 1, Mariana Reding and Simone Bergeron were the first to finish, ending 6-1 against Anja Antonijevic and Marija Ristanovic.
- At No. 2, finishing third, freshmen duo Heidi Bulger and Lisa Kranec made their debut as a doubles pair and dominated the court to take down Prerana Koirala and Serena Teluwo 6-2.
- At No. 3, finishing second, Ella Suk and Madison Cordisco defeated Eni Anic and Camilla Angiani-Mortino, 6-2.
Singles Recap: Elon kept up the hard work and handed Shaw a quick loss after winning four singles matches, one of which was finished retired, eventually leaving the last two unfinished.
- At No. 1, Simone Bergeron defeated Prerana Koirala 6-0, 6-2 to win.
- At No. 2, Helen Sarikulaya faced Anja Antonijevic, but their match went unfinished. Sarikulaya was down one, and the match ended 6-5.
- At No. 3, Madison Cordisco improved her singles record to 6-1, beating Eni Anic 6-0, 6-0.
- At No. 4, Lisa Kranec faced Marija Ristanovic, but the match ultimately finished retired with Kranec winning the first set, 6-1, and being up 1-0 when the match was called in her favor.
- At No. 5, Ella Suk and Serena Teluwo's match went unfinished, as Shaw had won the first set 6-2 and was leading 2-1 in the second set.
- At No. 6, Miray Konar clinched the match, beating Hafsa Sanhaji 6-1, 6-3.
MATCH 2: Salem
Doubles Recap: The Phoenix kept the pressure on as they swept all three matches without dropping a game.
- At No. 1, Miray Konar and Helen Sarikulaya faced Adley Keim and Cymone Crump, where the match went unfinished with Konar and Sarikulaya up 5-0.
- At No. 2, Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding were the first to finish, ending 6-0 against Mariana Faint and Daisy Ortiz Mendoza. This duo now holds a 6-1 record as a doubles pair, the team's best.
- At No. 3, Lisa Kranec and Ella Suk defeated Abrielle Eckenroth and Emily Buckler 6-0.
Singles Recap: To close the day, the Phoenix swept all six singles matches, losing just one game.
- At No. 1, Helen Sarikulaya faced Adley Keim, claiming victory 6-0, 6-0.
- At No. 2, Mariana Reding won 6-1, 6-0 against Cymone Crump.
- At No. 3, Madison Cordisco brought it home, finishing last and winning 6-0, 6-0 over Mariana Faint.
- At No. 4, Lisa Kranec faced Daisy Ortiz Mendoza, claiming a satisfying win of 6-0, 6-0.
- At No. 5, Miray Konar got down to business, finishing first and winning 6-0, 6-0 against Samantha Smiley.
- At No. 6, Ella Suk won 6-0, 6-0 against Jessea James.
Up next: Despite the two smooth victories today, Elon is not done this weekend. The Phoenix retakes the court tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. for a Sunday match at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center versus No. 37 Furman. Furman is 5-2 on the season, with their only losses being to No. 39 Wake Forest and No. 27 Virginia Tech.
