Elon Drops Home Opener To Virginia Tech

Elon, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women's lacrosse team jumped out to a quick start, pulling away from Elon in a 16-4 victory Tuesday evening at Rudd Field. Senior attack Sammy Fisher scored three of Elon's four goals in the contest. Virginia Tech improved to 3-1 with win and Elon dropped to 0-2.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Virginia Tech scored five times in the first eight minutes of the contest to go ahead 5-0, but the Elon defense settled in and held the Hokies scoreless for the final 7:22 of the first period.
  • Sammy Fisher got Elon on the board with her first goal of the 2025 season and the Phoenix trailed 5-1 after one.
  • Virginia Tech got the offense going again in the second, scoring six consecutive goals for an 11-1 lead. Mia Zebley stopped the run with a free position goal and Elon went into the half down 11-2.
  • Virginia Tech build the lead to 16-2 with the first five goals of the second half but Fisher scored twice in the final 11 minutes and the Elon defense shut out the Hokies down the stretch for the 16-4 final.
 
STATS AND NOTES
  • Sammy Fisher recorded the 13th hat trick of her career after being shut out of the scoring column in the season opener against No. 25 Duke.
  • Mia Zebley's goal gave her three on the season, tied for the team lead along with Fisher and Ana Lee Vandiver.
  • Fisher had a team-high six shots, all of which were on goal.
  • Caitlin Walsh picked up a team-best three groundballs.
  • Virginia Tech outshot Elon 27-16, including 21-8 on goal.
  • Both teams had 10 turnovers and were almost identical on clear attempts – Virginia Tech was 9-of-10 and Elon was 9-of-11.
  • Virginia Tech won the battle in the draw circle, 17-6.
 
UP NEXT
  • Elon is scheduled to be home Saturday to host VCU at noon. VCU enters the contest with a record of 1-2 overall.
