Late Offensive Run Pushes Elon Past Towson

TOWSON, MD. — A late fourth-quarter offensive run helped the Elon women's basketball team (12-9, 6-4 CAA) secure a 45-41 win over Towson (6-16, 4-7 CAA).

THE RUNDOWN
  • Elon jumped out to a 7-2 lead after an and-one from Raven Preston and a jumper from Iycez Adams. The teams traded baskets, but Towson cut the deficit to three, trailing 11-8 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The second quarter saw a back-and-forth battle, with the Tigers making back-to-back baskets to tie the score at 13-13. The teams continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the half, heading into the break knotted at 19-19.
  • Elon led 23-21 with 7:50 remaining but the Tigers went on a 6-0 run to gain a four-point advantage at 27-23. A driving layup from Adams ended the Tigers run with Elon trailing two with 5:35 left in the third quarter. Towson later extended its lead to 35-30, but baskets from Adams and Regina Walton brought Elon within one at 30-29. The Tigers pushed their lead back to three at 32-329, but both teams traded free throws to close the third quarter with Towson leading 33-31.
  • Elon quickly regained the lead in the fourth quarter at 35-33, but Towson answered to go back up 36-35 with 5:55 remaining. A steal and finish from Jayda Angel put Elon back on top, 37-36, but the Tigers responded once again, leading 39-37 with 2:01 left. The Phoenix surged ahead after a clutch three-pointer from Raven Preston, followed by a layup from Angel to take a 42-39 lead with 42 seconds remaining. Angel then knocked down a free throw to extend the lead to 43-39. Towson cut the deficit to two with a pair of free throws, making it 43-41 with 26 seconds left, but Laila Anderson sealed the 45-41 victory with clutch free throws.
NOTES
  • Kamryn Doty returned to the starting lineup alongside Iycez Adams, Laila Anderson, Maraja Pass, and Raven Preston.
  • Adams recorded her second double-double of the season, leading the team with 12 points and 11 rebounds while also contributing three blocks. Preston followed adding eight points and seven rebounds.
  • Hannah Dereje and Preston tied for the team lead with two steals each, while Kamryn Doty and Ruby Willard each recorded an assist.
  • The Phoenix held the advantage in steals (9-7) and points in the paint (22-14).
UP NEXT      
  • The maroon and gold travel to UNCW for a Friday night matchup against the Seahawks on February 14 at 7 p.m. before hosting Campbell for the annual Play4Kay game on Sunday, February 16 at 1 p.m.
