Elon Beats LIU, 6-1

Elon, N.C. - The Elon University women's tennis team took on LIU at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center under the warm March sun. Along with the nice weather came a nice 6-1 win for the Phoenix. This victory brings Elon to 10-4, dropping LIU to 1-8. 

Doubles Recap: The Phoenix quickly won the doubles point, winning two matches and leaving the third unfinished. These doubles matches were a great beginning to a good day for the Phoenix. 

On court No. 3, Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding got the Phoenix's first win of the day beating Ksenia Reznitskaya and Isadora Miller 7-5. This victory moved the duo's doubles record to 8-3, the best of any pair on the team. Finishing second, Helen Sarikulaya and Miray Konar faced Lucia Garrigues and Mia Tsoukalas on court No. 1, claiming victory and securing the doubles point for the Phoenix with a 7-5 win. At No. 3, Lisa Kranec and Heidi Bulger's match was left unfinished. Before leaving the match unfinished, Kranec and Bulger were up 5-4 against Jenna Svatos and Clara Tardivel. 

Singles Recap: The Phoenix knew what they had to do and won five singles matches to win 6-1 over LIU. 

Freshman Heidi Bulger kicked off Elon's singles victories on court No. 4 by beating Paula Guillen 6-0, 6-1. Finishing second, Helen Sarikulaya defeated her opponent Ksenia Reznitskaya on court No. 2, 6-0, 6-2. Hitting the halfway point in the singles matches, freshman Lisa Kranec kept up her singles streak, beating Jenna Svatos 6-0 in the first set and 7-6 in the second with a 7-5 tiebreak on court No. 6. This moves Kranec's singles record to 12-1.

As the Phoenix continued the rest of the match, they picked up two more singles wins by Mariana Reding and Madison Cordisco. Finishing fourth, Reding beat Mia Tsoukalas on court No. 3, winning 7-5, 6-1. At court No. 5, Cordisco did not let up. Facing LIU's Clara Tardivel, Cordisco won the first set 6-2, losing the second 6-4. Cordisco brought her fiery energy into the tiebreak, taking the victory 1-0 (10-5). Lastly, Simone Bergeron ultimately fell to Lucia Garrigues after a hard-fought fight. Playing on court No. 1, Garrigues won the first set 6-3 with Bergeron taking the second set 6-2. The two went into a tie break and Garrigues pulled off the win 1-0 (11-9).

Up next: Elon heads to Buies Creek, N.C. on Saturday to face Campbell at 1:00 p.m. for the Phoenix's first CAA match of the season. The Fighting Camels are 5-5 on the season and will face Norfolk State on Thursday at home. For added excitement, head coach Elizabeth Anderson is now just one win away from 300 career wins.
