Elon, N.C.- On Saturday, the Elon Phoenix (8-10) led early in the first inning thanks to a pair of doubles from
Ryan Sprock and
Will Vergantino. After the first frame, it was all Terriers as Wofford (13-6) struck back against the Phoenix Saturday afternoon.
Â
Elon dropped the Saturday showdown with the Terriers 14-3 in eight innings. The Phoenix led 2-0 after one frame of play but Wofford used scoring surges of eight and then six consecutive runs to race away with the Saturday fixture.
Â
All three Phoenix hits were doubles off the bats of Sprock, Vergantino and
Vince Fattore.
Owen Winebarger was a bright spot out of the bullpen again. The freshman threw 2.2 innings in relief, struck out three and allowed just two hits.
Â
How It Happened
- Elon led early in the contest and jumped on the Wofford starting pitcher. After two quick outs, Sprock ignited the rally with a blistering double into right center. Following an Alex Duffey walk, Vergantino brought both men in with Duffey scoring from first on the two-RBI double.
- The lead was short lived as the Terriers put up five unearned runs in the top of the second to grab the lead.
- After another Terriers run, Elon responded with a sacrifice fly from Jackson Alford to bring in another run and cut into the deficit.
- Beginning in the fifth inning, Wofford would score two runs in every inning for eight unanswered runs to pull away from the Phoenix and take game two, 14-3.
