Men’s Tennis to Host Gardner-Webb Ahead of Trip to UNC Asheville

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men's tennis team is set to host Gardner-Webb Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, before taking a trip Friday to UNC Asheville for another 1:00 p.m. start. The Phoenix head into the match with a record of 3-6 following a 5-2 defeat to Bucknell last week. Gardner-Webb is currently 15-3 on the season, winning their most recent campaign 7-0 against Longwood. UNC Asheville holds an 8-4 record on the season, with their most recent match earning them a 5-2 win over The Citadel.

ABOUT ELON
  • After starting the year 0-4, Elon has improved to 3-6 on the season.
  • The Phoenix's most recent win was in a match against CAA foe Campbell in which they defeated the Camels 4-3 on the road. 
  • Rafael Ymer is 5-4 in singles play, the most wins on the team. He has won four out of his last six matches and is 5-3 at No. 2 singles.
  • Ymer is the current reigning Co-CAA Player of the Week after clinching the match against Campbell going 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
  • Veljko Krstic and Oskar Antinheimo were named CAA Doubles Team of the Week two weeks ago. The pair is 4-2 at No. 1 doubles for the Phoenix and has earned four straight winning decisions.
  • Juan Sengariz has solidified the lineup at No. 6 singles, winning each of the past two matches at that spot after the team had begun 0-7 at that spot.
  • Head Coach Maciek Sykut is in his first year as head coach of the Phoenix. He took over the program after spending five years on the coaching staff at Duke.

SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB
  • Gardner-Webb is currently 15-3 this season and has won four in a row.
  • In their most recent match against Longwood, the Bulldogs secured a 7-0 win. 
  • Among the Runnin' Bulldogs three losses this year are defeats to No. 1 Wake Forest (5-2) and No. 33 Clemson (4-1). Gardner-Webb defeated No. 72 Liberty 5-2.
  • Individually, Eduardo Dias is 14-3 this year, playing at the No. 1 singles position. 
  • Mike Healm leads the Bulldogs in his 23rd year as head coach for the program. 

SCOUTING UNC ASHEVILLE
  • UNC Asheville is currently 8-4 on the season, with its most recent campaign against the Citadel earning them a 5-2 win. 
  • Freddy Murray leads the team individually, boasting a 10-2 singles record at the No. 1 spot.
  • The doubles team of Griffin Lovern and Tarek Erlewein is 4-1 overall, including 2-1 at No. 1 doubles. Lovern has gone 7-2 in doubles, playing at all three spots in the lineup.
  • Head Coach Matt Frost joined the Bulldogs for his opening season as head coach in 2023, taking UNC Asheville to a 16-8 season record. 

SERIES HISTORY
  • Elon is 9-2 all-time against Gardner-Webb but the Runnin' Bulldogs won the most recent meeting, a 6-1 victory in 2023.
  • Elon is also 5-1 all-time against UNC Asheville, picking up a 6-1 victory a year ago. The Phoenix has won three straight and the Bulldogs have not beaten Elon since 2003.

THE CAA TOURNAMENT
  • Elon will host the CAA Tournament for both men's and women's tennis this spring. The top six men's teams in the conference will converge on Elon for the April 25-27 tournament.
