Phoenix Soars Past Gardner-Webb with Strong Showing

Box Score ELON, N.C. – The Elon University Men's Tennis team picked up a commanding 5-2 win over Gardner-Webb Monday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, winning for the third time in the past four matches. Arguably the most impressive win of the season, Elon (now 4-6 overall) handed Gardner-Webb a rare defeat as the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to 15-4 on the season. Among Gardner-Webb's 15 wins thus far were CAA foe Campbell and No. 73 Liberty. Their previous three losses came against teams with a combined dual match record of 51-4 this spring (No. 1 Wake Forest, No. 33 Clemson and Stetson).

The Phoenix set the tone early by clinching the doubles point with dominant performances on courts two and three. Jack Curtis and Rafael Ymer made quick work of their opponents with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, while Charles Pilet and Juan Sengariz followed suit with a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot. The No. 1 tandem of Veljko Krstic and Oskar Antinheimo fell 6-2 to Gardner-Webb's top duo, but Elon took the doubles point overall, going up 1-0.

In singles play, the Phoenix stayed in control, winning four out of six matches.

Sengariz was first off the court, cruising to a straight-sets win (6-2, 6-1) at No. 6 singles. Curtis added another point for Elon with a strong showing at No. 4, defeating Alexandre Bergeron 6-2, 6-3. Antinheimo sealed the team victory at No. 3 singles, grinding out a tight first-set tiebreak before closing out a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win.

Ymer delivered one of the most exciting matches of the day at No. 2 singles, bouncing back after dropping a second-set tiebreak to prevail in a decisive 10-point super tiebreak, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-3.

Gardner-Webb picked up points at No. 1 and No. 5 singles. Krstic fell in two close sets at the top spot, 7-6 (4), 6-2, while Pilet was edged out in a three-set battle at No. 5, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Elon will look to build upon this victory as the Phoenix play at UNC Asheville Friday at 1:00 p.m.
