Declan Lavelle Dominates; Elon Shuts Out Brown

Elon, N.C.- After his best start as an Elon Phoenix (5-6) in the win over Binghamton, graduate Declan Lavelle topped the performance in a dominant pitching performance over Brown (0-7). Seven great innings from Lavelle propelled the Phoenix to the series sweep over the Bears with a 5-0 Sunday victory.

Lavelle, Ryan Sprock and Hudson Narke combined for the shutout, Elon's first since their 3-0 win over Wake Forest last season. The trio combined to allow just three hits while striking out 13 batters and walking just one.

Kenny Mallory Jr. continued to find his form at the plate and hit his first home run of the season in the win. Mallory finished with a season high three RBIs while Tank Yaghoubi finished with a multi-hit game and drove in the other Phoenix run.

How It Happened
  • Declan Lavelle started his afternoon by allowing just one of the two hits allowed in the top of the first inning.
  • Elon would see two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first but could not find a run.
  • Lavelle secured his first three-up, three-down inning in the second, his first of five innings working to the minimum.
  • The Phoenix got on the board in the second inning. After a leadoff walk to Vince Fattore and advancing on a passed ball, Tank Yaghoubi would single into the right center field gap which scored Fattore.
  • Elon added another run in the third inning after loading the bases in the inning. With the bases loaded, Nathan Wingenroth hit a ground ball to second base which was booted by the Bear's defender and scored Ryan Sprock from third to double Elon's lead.
  • Declan Lavelle continued to roll while Brown pitching found a groove as well. Brown would not allow a run in the fourth of fifth inning, while Lavelle faced the minimum nine batters from innings four through six.
  • Kenny Mallory Jr. would double Elon's lead once again in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run, which doubled Elon's lead again.
  • After Declan Lavelle finished his seventh inning, Ryan Sprock entered on the mound and struck out a pair of batters in his one inning of work.
  • Mallory Jr. drove in another run in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single to extend the lead to five before the ninth inning.
  • Hudson Narke shut the door in the ninth with a 12-pitch frame to help secure the sweep over Brown.
