Elon, N.C.- After back-to-back losses, the Elon Phoenix (10-15, 2-2 CAA) bounced back with one of their finest, all-around performances of the season. Elon took down the Delaware Blue Hens (13-11, 2-2 CAA), 8-2 Friday night after top performances from
Jackson Alford and
Justin Mitrovich.
Jackson Alford led the way for the Phoenix bats with his first career two-home run day. Alford drove in a team high three runs and scored two runs in the win.
Kenny Mallory Jr. finished with a complete day at the plate. Mallory singled twice, scored a run, drove in a run, stole two bases and reached base five times.
Starter
Justin Mitrovich tossed his finest game of the season of the season and continued to dominant Delaware after three seasons with the Phoenix. Mitrovich tossed 6.1 innings, allowed just two hits and struck out eight with no runs given up in the win.
How It Happened
- After a two-strikeout inning from Mitrovich, Alford led off the Phoenix batters on the night with a leadoff home run to left field.
- A three-up, three-down inning from Mitrovich followed in the second before Vince Fattore led off the bottom of the inning with a single. After a Mallory walk, Tank Yaghoubi singled through the right side to score Fattore from second to double the Phoenix advantage.
- Elon continued to put up runs with another run in the third. A single from Alex Duffey beat the Blue Hen shift to score Granatell from second base and increase the Elon lead to three.
- In the fourth inning, Mitrovich continued to dominate. Mitrovich struck out three batters in the inning to increase his tally to five. The right-hander then struck out another two batters in the fifth inning and had not allowed a hit since the first inning.
- In the fifth, Kenny Mallory singled through the right side to score Ryan Sprock after two walks in the inning. Will Vergantino drove in another run on a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 5-0.
- Alford topped his first inning home run with another home run to left field which traveled farther and came off the bat faster than the first for his second home run of the night.
- Elon produced a pair of two-out runs in the seventh inning thanks in part to the base running of Mallory. After a leadoff single, Mallory stole second, stole third and scored on a passed ball to increase the Elon advantage. Alford capped his night with an RBI single that scored Jake Hajdu from second to complete the Elon scoring.
- After Mitrovich exited, Sam Nomura induced a ground ball double play with the first pitch he threw to end the seventh inning.
- Delaware got two runs back in the eighth inning before Nomura and the Phoenix retired the Blue Hens in a row in the ninth to take the 8-2 win.
