ECU Hands Elon 4-3 Setback

Elon, N.C. - The Elon University women's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision to East Carolina Saturday at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. After ECU won the doubles point, the two teams split the six singles matches for the 4-3 Pirates' victory. The loss drops the Phoenix to 11-6 on the season, raising ECU to 5-9. 

Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding pulled off a quick 6-0 victory in doubles to begin the match. Unfortunately, their victory was not enough to get the Phoenix the doubles point. Miray Konar and Helen Sarikulaya were close to a win but ultimately lost 7-5.

Mariana Reding knew what she had to do in singles to get Elon on the board. Reding won in straight sets at No. 3 singles, finishing first 6-0, 6-2. After singles wins by Heidi Bulger and Madison Cordisco, the match was tied 3-3. As only one singles match remained, Helen Sarikulaya had the potential to clinch the match. After splitting two tiebreak sets, Sarikulaya and ECU's Martina Muzzolon went to a third set. Muzzolon pulled out the 6-7 (0-7), 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 win to clinch the match for ECU.

The Phoenix will return to the courts to host North Carolina A&T (8-6) Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. That contest marks the second of six straight home matches to conclude the regular season before hosting the CAA Tournament April 25-27.
