Storm Surge Swamps Phoenix In Loss To No. 19 Stony Brook

Elon, N.C. – A deluge of rain forced Friday evening's key CAA women's lacrosse matchup to relocate from Rudd Field in an ironic twist. With the #FloodTheRudd field deemed unplayable, Elon and No. 19 Stony Brook instead met on the adjacent Hunt Practice Field, a turf surface just steps from the Phoenix's home field.

Despite the soggy conditions, Stony Brook was unfazed. The Seawolves scored twice in the first 28 seconds and went on to an 18-8 victory, the program's 21st consecutive CAA win since joining the conference in 2023. Stony Brook improved to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while Elon falls to 6-6 and 3-2 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the second quarter, Lila Ceribelli converted a free-position shot at 10:41 to cut the deficit to 5-2.
  • Less than two minutes later, Vandiver buried a free-position goal of her own to bring the Phoenix within three at 6-3.
  • With seven seconds left in the half, Fisher netted her second goal—this time unassisted—to send Elon into halftime trailing 10-4.
  • Just over 30 seconds into the third quarter, Kailey McKenna finished a feed from Ceribelli, trimming the lead to 10-5.
  • After a Stony Brook response, Mia Zebley tallied an unassisted goal at the 10:10 mark of the third, making it 11-6.
  • Elon added two more in the fourth:
