Elon, N.C.- Elon Baseball (13-22, 5-7 CAA) used a late-game surge to take a Sunday, rubber match win over the Towson Tigers (13-23, 5-7 CAA). Two eighth-inning runs were enough to lift the Phoenix to a 6-4 win and their first CAA series win of the 2025 season.
Â
Ryan Sprock helped lift Elon to a win in multiple ways on Sunday. The junior hit a first inning home run while finishing 2-for-3, scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, and earned the save on the mound.
Alex Duffey put together his fourth-straight multi-hit performance of the week on Sunday. Duffey finished 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in the win.
Â
How It Happened
- Towson took the lead early with an RBI single in the top of the first to grab a 1-0 advantage.Â
- Like they have done all season, the Phoenix answered with early runs in the first inning. With two away, Ryan Sprock hit a towering fly ball to left field that just got out of Latham Park that tied the score. An Alex Duffey walk was followed by a double from Vince Fattore that scored the catcher from first to give the Phoenix a 2-1 lead.
- Declan Lavelle got the start on the mound  and threw up back-to-back zeros on the mound in the second and third innings.
- Alex Duffey continued his hot start to the day with an RBI single in the bottom of the third that scored Jackson Alford. Fattore drove in another run just one batter later as the Phoenix extended their lead to three after three innings of play.
- Towson struck back with three runs in the top of the fourth to eliminate the Phoenix lead.
- After the three-run fourth, the Phoenix and Tigers would enter a pitcher's duel with both sets of bats going cold. Declan Lavelle settled in after surrendering the crooked inning.
- In the bottom of the eighth inning, a pitching change for Towson would bring some life to the Phoenix bats. A Ryan Sprock single was met with a Duffey double in tandem to put runners in scoring position with one out. A first pitch, wild pitch to to Kenny Mallory Jr. was enough to score Sprock from third to give the Phoenix a one-run lead. Will Vergantino added insurance with a double into left center to extend the lead to two.
- Sprock came in to pitch from the DH role in the ninth and sat down the Tigers 1-2-3 to put a bow on the CAA series win for the Phoenix.
