Women's Tennis Sweeps Norfolk State On Senior Day, 7-0

Elon, N.C. - The Elon University women's tennis team celebrated senior day with a full sweep victory, defeating Norfolk State 7-0. Konar, who has played in 59 career matches (23 singles and 36 doubles) for the Phoenix, was recognized before first serve and later partnered with Heidi Bulger to earn her 38th career win (16 singles and 22 doubles).

After the win, Elon is 16-5 on the season, dropping Norfolk State to 11-11. This is the Phoenix's fifth consecutive win, with their win total surpassing last season's and tying the 2022-23 season. The 16 wins matches the program's highest regular season win total since posting 19 in the 2013 season.

Starting off strong, Elon went into doubles excited and energetic. Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding quickly defeated Norfolk State's Angelina Maniawska and Irina Iuera for Elon's first win of the day. That marks the pair's ninth consecutive doubles win and moves them to 15-3 on the season with the 6-0 victory. To secure the doubles point for Elon, Helen Sarikulaya and Lisa Kranec got a 6-3 win over Sofiya Tisitavets and Ines Sabadie. Miray Konar and Heidi Bulger completed the doubles sweep in clean Elon fashion, defeating Caroline Nicholls and Yuliya Yurkova 6-3.

For Bergeron, it marked her 17th doubles win of the year, moving into a four-way tie for sixth in school history.

With all six players winning in straight sets, Elon swept singles. Mariana Reding was the first to win, defeating Norfolk State's Sofiya Tisitavets 6-0, 6-3. Next was Helen Sarikulaya, defeating Ines Sabadie 6-0, 6-2. To clinch the match, Madison Cordisco fought for a 6-4, 6-0 win over Angelina Maniawska. The Phoenix chose to play the match out, collecting three more wins on courts six, four, and one, ending the day having won every set.

At No. 6, dominant singles player Lisa Kranec faced challenges in her first set but ultimately won in a 7-1 tiebreak. Kranec then eased through her second set, winning the match with a final score of 7-6, 6-0. For Elon's fifth singles win of the day, Heidi Bulger claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Caroline Nicholls. Simone Bergeron had comeback wins in both sets to close out the match, defeating Norfolk State's Yuliya Yurkova 6-3, 6-4.

Kranec improved to 16-2 in singles play this year and moved into the top 15 for most wins in a single-season in program history, tied for 13th (most recently, Lizette Reding won 16 in 2017).

Up next: The Phoenix will return to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on April 19 at noon for their final match of the regular season. Elon will host CAA opponent William and Mary, who is 13-4 this season. Elon is also preparing to host the CAA tournament April 25 through April 27 at JPTC.
