The Phoenix Ends Their Regular Season in a 4-3 Victory Over William & Mary

Box Score

Elon, N.C. – On Saturday at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, the Elon University women's tennis team beat CAA opponent William & Mary 4-3 to close out their regular season. After clinching the doubles point, the Phoenix fought through nail-biting singles matches, with sophomore Mariana Reding clinching the match. The Phoenix ends the regular season with a record of 17-5, exceeding their win total from both the 2023-24 season and the 2022-23 season.

Marking the Phoenix's sixth consecutive win, the Phoenix is now 17-5, dropping William & Mary to 13-5. Both teams began the match fiercely, with a lively crowd at JPTC. The Tribe claimed the first win of the day as Francesca Davis and Alessandra Anghel defeated Helen Sarikulaya and Lisa Kranec 6-2. However, in classic No. 1 doubles fashion, Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding collected their tenth doubles win in a row, the pair's sixteenth overall. The dynamic duo beat William & Mary's Hedda Gurholt and Ine Stange 6-4. Following with another 6-4 win, Miray Konar and Heidi Bulger decided the doubles point, defeating Emma Fernald and Mira Kernagis.

William & Mary went into singles ready to avenge their doubles loss, but ultimately, the Phoenix had other plans.

Freshman Lisa Kranec put up a good fight against William & Mary's Mira Kernagis but lost 6-4, 6-4. As the teams were now tied 1-1, the Tribe harnessed their energy to get a win at No. 1 singles as Hedda Gurholt defeated Simone Bergeron 6-3, 6-2. Heidi Bulger put up another point for the Phoenix, tying the match 2-2. Bulger defeated William & Mary's Ine Stange 6-1, 6-3.

Madison Cordisco defeated Francesca Davis, winning 7-6 (7-2), 7-5, after being behind in both sets. Now up 3-2, it was up to Elon's Mariana Reding and Helen Sarikulaya to decide the match.

Despite having lost her first set, Reding was on fire as she won the second 6-3. Heading into the third set, it was anybody's game. Reding immediately pulled ahead, dominating the set to win 6-1, clinching the match.

Having already clinched the match, No. 3 singles played it out in a tiebreaker set after Helen Sarikulaya won the first set 6-2, losing the second 7-6 (7-3). Ultimately, William & Mary's Sia Chaudry won No. 3 singles in the tiebreaker set, going 1-0 (10-7). While Chaudry put one more point on the board for William and Mary, the match ended in a 4-3 victory for the Phoenix.

Up next: The Phoenix will host the CAA Tournament at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The tournament begins on Friday at 10 a.m. and runs through Sunday. The schedule for the tournament will be based on seed, which will be announced on Monday.
