CAMDEN, S.C. – Elon University men's tennis dropped a tough 4-0 decision to #62 St. John's University on Tuesday afternoon in Camden, S.C. The Phoenix battled in multiple close matches but ultimately came up short against a strong Red Storm squad.
In singles play, Elon's Rafael Ymer fought valiantly on Court 1 but fell in straight sets to St. John's Max Amling, 6-4, 7-5. On Court 2, Veljko Krstic pushed the match to a deciding set after taking the second frame 6-3, but Carl Gustavsson held strong for the Red Storm to claim the point with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win.
Jack Curtis and Charles Pilet both put up gritty efforts at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, respectively, yet were edged in straight sets. Curtis dropped his match 6-4, 6-2, while Pilet battled in a tight second set before falling 6-3, 7-5.
Two matches were left unfinished after the overall result was clinched. Oskar Antinheimo held a one-set lead on Court 3 before the match was halted, while Juan Sengariz pushed his match to a third set at No. 5.
The Phoenix will look to bounce back in their regular season finale match, against Charleston at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Apr. 17 at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
