Phoenix Caps Series Sweep With 9-2 Win Over Aggies; Clinches Spot for CAA Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Elon University softball team concluded its weekend with a 9-2 win over North Carolina A&T on Sunday, April 20, securing a CAA series sweep over its Piedmont Triad rival at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.

The win improved the Phoenix to 25-15 with a 17-4 record in the CAA after its fourth league sweep of the year. Elon also secured its position to the 2025 CAA Softball Championships with today's win over the Aggies, who fell to 10-34 and 2-19 in league play.

At the Plate
• A day after recording 14 hits, the Phoenix had 16 base knocks versus the Aggies in the series finale. Eight of the nine players in Elon's lineup recorded at least one hit, including seven with multi-hit games.
Greta Hessenthaler led Elon at the dish after going 3-of-4 in the game. Chloe Hatzopoulos added her second straight multi-hit game after going 2-of-5 with a home run and a team-high three RBI.
Kaitlyn Wells was 2-of-5 at the plate and knocked in her 49th RBI of the season, setting the new single-season record in program history.

In the Circle
Isley Duggins received the win in relief, pitching 4.0 scoreless and hitless innings with three strikeouts. She improves to 3-1 on the season.
Meredith Wells started the game and pitched 3.0 innings and allowed two runs off two hits with a strikeout.

The Rundown
• Elon took a 4-0 lead after the top of the first. The Phoenix saw its first two batters reach on singles before a run scored off a Lady Aggies' error with Gabi Schaal reaching to give the Phoenix runners in scoring position with one out. Hatzopoulos drove in both runners with a single into right to put the Phoenix ahead 3-0. Elon added its final run of the frame on an RBI from Reagan Hartley on a groundout.
• The Lady Aggies tacked on a run to cut into the Phoenix's advantage. North Carolina A&T reached on a leadoff single and stole second to move into scoring position. A ground out advanced the runner to third before she scored off a wild pitch to make it a 4-1 ball game in favor of the maroon and gold.
• N.C. A&T added another run in the bottom of the third. The Lady Aggies scored on a two-out single up the middle to cut the Phoenix's lead in half, 4-2.
• Elon got a run back in the top of the fifth as Hatzopoulos stepped into the batter's box to lead off the inning. The Huntersville, N.C., native drove a sharp ball over the head of the diving right fielder with the ball rolling all the way to the fence. Hatzopoulos hustled around the bases, touching all four bases for the inside-the-park home run and a Phoenix 5-2 lead.
• The Phoenix had a chance to add to its lead in the top of the sixth. Elon loaded the bases with two outs after back-to-back singles, but could not move anyone home as the inning ended on a strikeout.
• The maroon and gold got back into the scoring column in the top of the seventh. The Phoenix plated four runs in the frame, starting with Hartley's second RBI of the game on a single to score pinch runner Peyton Fitzpatrick. Three more RBI singles from Seering, Kaitlyn Wells and Schaal increased Elon's lead to 9-2.
• Duggins worked around a two-out walk to retire the side in the bottom half of the seventh to secure the series sweep for Elon.

On Deck
• Elon's road trip ends at Charlotte on Tuesday, April 22, with game time scheduled for 6 p.m.
